Europe
Lockdowns Follow COVID-19 Surge
The latest wave of COVID-19 cases has hit Europe severely, particularly in unvaccinated populations. Multiple countries have reported record cases as of Thursday, with Germany reporting 65,000 in one day. A handful of countries in Europe have already imposed new lockdowns. In the wake of the new wave, Austria has declared a full lockdown to begin Monday; Austria Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg stated the lockdown would last at least 20 days, adding that there will be a legal requirement to become vaccinated beginning in February. Other countries in Europe are desperate to avoid more full-scale lockdowns to prevent economic decline. Alternatively, other countries are opting for COVID passports. The steep increase in cases in Europe may serve as a warning for other regions of the world as winter approaches.

Brazil
Deforestation Highest in 15 Years
A report published by Brazil’s space research agency, Inpe, found deforestation in the country’s Amazon rainforest increased by 22% in just one year. New data indicates at least 13,235 sq km (5110 sq miles) was lost during 2020, the highest since 2006. At the most recent COP26 climate summit in October, Brazil was one of many countries that promised to end deforestation by 2030. The Amazon is an important ecosystem to about 3 million species of plants and animals, as well as at least one million Indigenous people. Deforestation in the Amazon has markedly increased under the rule of President Jai Bolsonaro, who has encouraged agricultural and mining activities in the rainforest.

Mars
Perseverance Records Ingenuity
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently released new video footage recorded by the Perseverance rover of the Ingenuity rotorcraft drone performing a particularly challenging maneuver. Ingenuity’s 13th successful flight took place in early September, but needed to be downlinked and processed. The Ingenuity rotorcraft has remained operational far longer than planned, allowing NASA to take advantage and test the unit’s capabilities with more complicated flight paths while also capturing more images of Mars’ terrain. Ingenuity’s 16th flight is scheduled for tomorrow.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Which term had originally been used to distinguish the dark, fertile soil in the southern United States where slavery was hugely profitable, but later became a term to refer to the large number of Black people living in the region?

A: The Black Belt
American’s Black Belt region has been historically known for its high-yielding land and plantation lifestyles. Southern counties in this region—roughly 623 rural counties stretching from Alabama to Virginia—have relied heavily on the black soil and Black people to ensure economic security for white land owners. The Black Belt has evolved from a region of abundance to the nation’s highest poverty rate.
