COVID Death Toll Passes 6 Million
According to data from John Hopkins, the official global death toll from COVID-19 has passed six million as the spread enters its third year. In all likelihood, the global death count met that milestone some time ago, but gaps in testing and record-keeping leave a disparity between the official and actual total. A team at the Economist suggested the total number of deaths could be between 14.1 million and 23.8 million. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 445 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed across the world. All regions except for the Western Pacific (including China, Japan, and South Korea) have seen declines in new weekly cases. The United States has the world’s biggest official death toll, however, the death rate has been steadily declining over the past month.

BJP Wins Key Elections
India’s incumbent ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, won key state elections on Thursday. Elections were held in the states of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and the key battleground state of Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP won 255 of the 403 seats. Despite growing unemployment and inflation in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP overcame criticism on its economic and COVID-19 policies. Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state and its elections are considered a bellwether for political trends for the country.

Pakistan-India
Accidental Missile Launch
The Indian Ministry of Defence said a technical malfunction led to the accidental launching of an unarmed surface-to-surface missile into Pakistan. The missile landed near the city of Mian Channu in the eastern Punjab province, and was tracked by Pakistan’s air force from its origin at an Indian facility. There were no casualties and minimal structural damage, however Pakistani officials expressed frustration with the violation of airspace and potential for destruction due to the error. The two nuclear-armed countries have a long history of strained relations, with much of the tension stemming from disputed claims over the Kashmir territory in the Himalayan region.

Q: Which U.S. national park has diverse topographies, from seashores to glaciers to rainforests?
A: Olympic National Park
Olympic National Park is located in Washington state and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring wild coastlines, lakes, glaciers and mountains, and a temperate rainforest. It is the largest and most intact rainforest of temperate latitudes in the world. Due its diverse geological formations and varied rainfall, the park’s biodiversity is complex and unique to the park. Its relative isolation has produced a separate course of evolutionary development for a wealth of species, many of which are endemic to the park.
