Ukraine: War Crimes in Kyiv Suburbs

Ukraine
War Crimes in Kyiv Suburbs
The U.N., world governments, and international human rights organizations are beginning to compile information on alleged crimes against civilians committed by Russian forces during the month-long occupation of the towns surrounding Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Videos and photos taken by Ukrainian military and journalists entering the formerly occupied municipalities showed civilian casualties, and instances of looting, torture, rape, and murder by Russian soldiers have been reported by residents. Russian authorities have alleged that images of civilian casualties were staged by Ukrainians upon re-entry to the areas, but satellite images have confirmed the presence of many bodies prior to the withdrawal of Russian soldiers.

Hungary
Orban Scores Large Electoral Win
Viktor Orban and his nationalist Fidesz party are projected to have won a landslide electoral victory in Hungary, with about 98% of national party list votes tallied. Fidesz led with 53.1% of votes against 35% for the alliance of the opposition parties. The National Election Office said Fidesz looks to claim a two-thirds majority in parliament with 135 seats, and the opposition alliance controlling 56 seats. The victory marks Orban’s third consecutive term since 2010 and comes amid rising inflation and a sluggish economy, as well as a refugee crisis brought on by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ecuador
Prison Riot Breaks Out
A riot triggered by a prisoner leadership dispute began early Sunday at Turi Prison near Cuenca. Violence started in the prison’s maximum security section between prison gangs armed with guns and knives, prompting over 1,000 police and military personnel to be dispatched to the penitentiary. 20 inmates were killed and at least another 11 were injured. Ecuador’s prison system is chronically overcrowded and intensifying gang related clashes have become more prevalent, with 320 inmates killed in riots during 2021 alone. Ecuador’s 65 prisons, with an overall capacity of around 30,000 inmates, are currently overpopulated by 30%.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Although one of the most important wetlands in Africa, which lake, bordering four countries, has shrunk 90% over the last six decades due to increased use and decreased rainfall?

A: Lake Chad
Over the last 60 years, with chronic droughts increasing in the region, Lake Chad has shrunk 90 percent. The lake’s surface area was around 16,800 mi (26,000 km) in 1963, and today is at 932 mi (1,500 km). Temperatures here are rising 1.5 times faster than the global average. Climate change has accelerated the shrinking of Lake Chad and is amplifying food insecurity and natural resource depletion in the region. Lake Chad is bordered by Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon, with its basin extending to Algeria, Libya, and the Central African Republic, and provides food and water for some 50 million people. In addition to the problems due to climate change are the population explosion at its basin and the increase in armed conflicts.
