Malian Army Attacks Militants
The Malian military claims to have killed 203 militants in an anti-jihadist operation in the Moura area in late March. The government of Mali has been struggling to contain a growing jihadist movement which started in the north of the country ten years ago and has spread throughout Africa’s Sahel region — the area immediately south of the Sahara desert stretching across most of the continent from east to west. Journalists and international monitors have been unable to verify Mali’s claims given the difficulty of accessing the conflict zone, but the U.S. State Department and other international organizations have voiced concern for aggression against civilians by Malian forces.

Somalia
Fire Destroys Waheen Market
A fire began overnight on Friday at the Waheen market in Hargeisa, Somaliland, Somalia, eventually spreading to hundreds of businesses and injuring 28 people. The blaze spread from an old warehouse through the crowded market shops, sending up columns of flames and black smoke above the city. The narrow paths between stalls and difficult access points hampered firefighters’ efforts to control the fire. Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has pledged $1 million USD to assist with the emergency response and rebuilding process. Waheen market, home to an estimated 2,000 shops and stalls, accounts for 40-50% of Hargeisa’s economy.

Sacramento Shooting
Six people were killed and 12 more wounded after a shooting in downtown Sacramento early Sunday morning, in an area known for its nightlife. Cell phone videos indicated a fight broke out among a large crowd of people prior to the shooting. Police have confirmed multiple shooters and recovered one firearm and a stolen handgun. The death toll and number of people wounded makes this the worst mass shooting in Sacramento’s history and is currently the worst mass shooting in the United States this year.

Q: Because of tequila’s designation of origin status, its geographic indications require genuine tequila to be grown and produced in what specific region of Mexico?
A: Jalisco, Mexico
“Designation of Origin” refers to the geographical region of a country in which a product’s origin has exclusive characteristics of its specific geographic environment. Other known products with this status include Champagne, Gorgonzola, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Tequila was first granted protective measures in 1978 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, and in 1997, tequila was granted designation protection by the European Union. While there are several varieties of agave that are fermented and distilled to produce tequila, the Tequilana Weber Agave and the Blue Variety cultivated within the territory of declaration are considered to produce genuine tequila. The western central state of Jalisco, along with some municipalities in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas produce tequilas; any agave-based distilled spirits created outside these regions are labelled mezcals.
