Buffalo Supermarket Shooting
On Saturday, a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, left 10 people dead and three wounded. The suspected shooter is a white 18-year-old who traveled 200 miles from his hometown of Conklin, New York, to carry out the racially motivated attack. He livestreamed the shooting and also left a “manifesto” online, detailing his extremist beliefs. Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, stated the suspect intended to take, “as many black lives as possible.” Of the 13 people who were shot, police say 11 were black. This attack is thought to be the worst mass shooting in the United States in 2022, coming on the same weekend that one person was killed and five were injured in a shooting at a church in Laguna Woods, California, and two were killed and three were injured at a shooting at a Houston flea market.

Pakistan
Suicide Bomber Kills Six
A suicide bomber attacked a security patrol in Pakistan’s North Waziristan province, bordering Afghanistan, on Sunday. Three soldiers were in a vehicle near the town of Mir Ali when the bomber set off an explosives-laden vest, immediately killing two of the soldiers and critically injuring one soldier and three children near by. All the injured were rushed to the hospital but succumbed to their injuries. Also on Sunday, gunmen on a motorcycle attacked a group of minority Sikhs in Peshawar, also near the Afghan border, killing two men as they were setting up their spice shop. No group claimed responsibility for either attack and they aren’t believed to be connected. Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan is known for numerous safe havens for militants.

United Arab Emirates
World Leaders Welcome President
World leaders have gathered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to offer condolences on the the death of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and congratulate his brother, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at his ascension to the presidency. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson both visited with the new president Sunday, followed by Israeli President Isaac Herzog and the King of Spain, Felipe VI. Sheikh Mohamed’s ascension to the position of UAE’s president formalizes the power he’s wielded in the country since 2014, when his older brother, Sheikh Khalifa, suffered a stroke but remained in the office for years despite ongoing illness. Sheikh Khalifa passed away on Friday. Under Sheikh Mohamed’s guidance, the UAE has emerged as a critical power in the Middle East, being among the first Arab nations to peacefully engage Israel and support Saudi Arabia to counteract Iranian influence in the region by fighting the Iran-supported Houthi rebels in Yemen.

A: United States
Of the 4 million miles of US road network, 2.6 million miles (4.3 million km) is of paved roads and 1.4 million miles (2.28 million km) of unpaved roads. The vast American network consists of three road types, interstate highways, US routes or numbered highways, and state highways. The Interstate 90 (I-90) connects Boston to Seattle, stretching some 3,100 miles (4,990 km) across the country, and is part of Route 20 (US 20), the east to west highway known for being the longest single road in the country at 3,364 miles (5,415 km). While the US boasts the largest road network in the world, China and India, the two most populous countries, come in second and third place respectively. China’s express network alone extends over 60,000 miles (96,000 km) and is the world’s largest of this type. The country’s rapid development is set to continue as they plan to have 3.6 million miles (5.8 million km) of total road network by 2030. India’s road network is their key transport infrastructure, making up 65% of freight traffic. The Golden Quadrilateral highway network connects the four major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, spans 3,332 miles (5,846 km), and is one of the largest in the world.
