Hurricane Fiona Wreaks Havoc
Hurricane Fiona became the third hurricane of the Atlantic Ocean’s 2022 hurricane season on Sunday. It made landfall on the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico that day, dumping up to 30 inches of rain, causing a total blackout, killing at least two people, and causing catastrophic flooding. This comes five years after Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017, which killed around 3,000 people and caused the worst power blackout in U.S. history. Torrential rains and powerful winds then hit the Dominican Republic on Monday, and today Fiona is expected to strengthen as it moves towards the islands of Turks and Caicos.

U.N. General Assembly Convenes
The United Nations is opening the 77th General Assembly today in New York City, with strict security measures in place to protect the more than 150 heads of state or heads of government attending the event. The leaders of Russia, China, and India, fresh off their meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan this past weekend, will not be in attendance, sending the heads of their foreign ministries instead. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the assembly remotely on Wednesday, having been given an exemption to the rule that all speakers must appear in person. This will be the first U.N. General Assembly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, and the ongoing effects of the conflict are set to dominate the discussions.

Wind Farms Set to Expand
A new partnership between the Biden administration and several eastern U.S. states is set to expand power generation from offshore wind farms. The partnership is intended to help states coordinate the direction of resources towards the building of new wind farms, including staging and harbor facilities, and establish relationships with manufacturers of turbine system components. President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law last month, provides tax credits for clean energy manufacturers, which will encourage the growth of domestic manufacturing of the components needed to build new turbines for the new power generation facilities.
This map depicts areas of the east coast of the United States currently in use or designated for development of offshore wind power generation under a new partnership agreement between the Biden administration and state governments. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: First settled around 60,000 years ago, where in the world will you find an archaeologically rich valley showing a succession of civilizations, including the capital of history’s largest contiguous land empire?
A: The Orkhon Valley
The Orkhon Valley is situated in central Mongolia and consists of grassland and pastureland along both sides of the historic Orkhon River. The site is home to various archaeological remains dating as far back as the 6th century. It is the location of the previous capital city of Genghis Khan’s extensive Mongol Empire, Kharkhorum. The Orkhon Valley, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, is a historical and symbolic location, linking nomadic and pastoral communities to political and religious centers. The valley has witnessed the evolution of the country’s societies while staying in harmony with the unique natural landscape. Hosting centuries of major political, trade, cultural, and religious activities of consecutive empires, the Orkhon Valley served as a strategic point in the crossroads of civilizations between East and West. The grassland is still grazed by Mongolian pastoralists today.
