Ex-Prime Minister Gets Shot
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan was struck by gunfire at a political rally yesterday in Wazirabad. The rally, or the March for Haqiqi Azadi (meaning true independence), was part of a campaign by his supporters to push for new elections. The march began in Lahore on October 28 and would have ended in Islamabad with a sit-in protest, but he was shot in the leg in Wazirabad and was hospitalized in Islamabad. A suspect was arrested at the scene, and Pakistan’s Ministry of Information also released a confession video of an anonymous man who attempted to assassinate Khan. Khan was ousted from office in April by a vote of no confidence before completing his term, but remains a popular political leader. Since the assassination attempt, more protests are emerging across Pakistan.

COVID-19 Lockdown around Plant
A number of workers held at a Foxconn iPhone plant have fled the facility, which is now currently locked down under China’s zero-COVID policy. The largest iPhone factory in the world went under lockdown in mid-October, walling off its approximately 200,000 workers within the factory grounds. Social media stories have emerged of lack of food and workers being forced to quarantine for contact with those who have already tested positive, all the while still being expected to continue working. The company on Tuesday began offering an additional $55 a day to encourage employees to keep working, but it is estimated hundreds of employees have already left, some traveling dozens of miles home on foot. Despite national outcry about the zero-COVID policy, it is expected for the policy to remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Ozone Hole Continues Shrinking
New data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Northern Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows the hole in the Earth’s ozone layer over the South Pole was slightly smaller than last year, continuing the overall shrinking trend of recent years. Between September 7 and October 13, the annual Antarctic ozone hole reached an average area of 9 million square miles (23.2 million km sq), which was slightly smaller than the average for the same period last year. According to NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Center, despite the effects of weather changes and other factors that make the numbers vary slightly from day to day, overall, the hole has been decreasing over the past two decades. At NASA and NOAA, scientists detect and measure both the growth and breakup of the ozone hole with instruments aboard the Aura, Suomi NPP, and NOAA-20 satellites.

Q: Thanks to the Gulf Stream, what U.S. city stays warm and mild year around, and is the second most humid city in the country?
A: Miami, Florida
Situated at the lower east coast of Florida, at the mouth of the Miami River, the city of Miami borders the Biscayne Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. The Gulf Stream is an ocean current which carries warm water from the Gulf of Mexico into the Atlantic, extending all the way up the eastern coast of the U.S. and Canada and making its way towards Europe. This strong current of warm water has a huge influence on Florida’s climate, keeping temperatures much warmer. The city’s year-round semi-tropical climate is characterized by warm and wet summers, followed by mild and dry winters. Humidity in the summertime averages about 87 percent during the day, making Miami the second most humid city in the U.S. after Houston, Texas. Due to its location and low elevation above sea level, Miami is susceptible and vulnerable to hurricanes, usually during the months of September and October.
