Campus Shooting Kills 3 Students
A University of Virginia student suspected of fatally shooting three people and wounding two others on Sunday night has been taken into custody. The shooting reportedly took place at around 10:30 p.m. ET (3:30 GMT) on a charter bus full of students returning from a field trip. A shelter-in-place order for the campus has been lifted, but classes were cancelled on Monday, and surrounding public schools in Albemarle County were also closed for the day. Police say the three victims, who were all juniors and members of UVA’s football team, were found dead on the scene. The university named the suspect as one of its students, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., aged 22. No possible motive for the attack was reported as police continued their investigation. The UVA Police Chief stated Jones will be charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun to commit a felony.

World
Population Reaches 8 Billion
The United Nations has declared November 15 as the “Day of Eight Billion,” as the international body is set to recognize the historic moment where humanity has reached a population of 8 billion. The Earth’s population has doubled since 1974, but overall growth has slowed. It took 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, and it is expected to take another 15 years before reaching 9 billion. Demographic trends suggest an overall increased quality of life, which is contributing to longer lifespans and higher fertility, however famine, conflict, and mass displacement have also been on the rise. UN Secretary General António Guterres has cautioned that inequalities in the world population will continue to threaten the global population’s overall stability and longevity.

Octopus Evolution Insights
A species of octopus appears to have independently evolved to develop something resembling a shell, according to a new paper in the journal Genome Biology and Evolution. This occurred despite the octopus having lost the genetic code that prompted shell formation in other mollusks. Argonauta argo, known as the great argonaut, is an octopus species living in tropical and subtropical open seas. To shield their eggs, female argonauts have a protective spiral-like egg case. The egg case looks similar to the shell of the commonly known pearly nautilus, but new genome data finds that the Argonauta argo’s egg case developed separately.

Q: While Japan is made up of 5 main islands, how many total islands does the country consist of?
A: Nearly 7,000
Located off the east coast of the Asian continent, the Japanese archipelago is made up of 6,852 islands. Five of these are considered mainland islands – Hokkaidō, Honshū, Shikoku, Kyūshū, and Okinawa – and the remaining are considered remote islands, of which 416 are inhabited. Japan stretches over 2,360 miles (3,800. km), similar to the distance between Maine and Florida, and therefore enjoys climatic variability. While Japan seems dwarfed by Russia and China, the island nation is actually quite large in landmass, larger than both the United Kingdom and Italy. Japan is also highly mountainous, with mountains covering some 80 percent of the landmass. Most of these mountains were forged by the collision of the Pacific Ocean plate with the continental plate of Asia. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is home to over 180 volcanoes, however only six are active. Being such a large archipelago, Japan is the largest consumer of fish per capita in the world.
