Ukraine
Grain Deal Extended
Russia and Ukraine have agreed to extend their previous agreement to allow grain exports from Ukrainian ports through a safe corridor in the Black Sea. The deal, which was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, was set to expire on Saturday, but will now continue for at least another 120 days. Nearly 11 million tons of grain and foodstuffs have been exported under this agreement, which has provided a lifeline for Ukraine’s wartime economy and helped ease food shortages around the world. The newly extended agreement will continue with the same provisions as before, however the Russian Foreign Ministry has repeated their warning against Ukraine’s usage of humanitarian shipping lanes for attacks on Russian ships – a charge Kyiv has previously denied. The President of Turkey has stated he’s looking to have the grain deal expand even further, potentially by a year.

Oman
Oil Tanker Hit by Armed Drone
An oil tanker associated with an Israeli billionaire was struck by a bomb-carrying drone off the coast of Oman, an attack the U.S and Israel believe was conducted by Iran. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attacked vessel was identified as the Liberian-flagged oil tanker, Pacific Zircon. The tanker is operated by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, a company owned by Israeli billionaire, Idan Ofer. Eastern Pacific Shipping reported no injuries or pollution. The vessel’s hull sustained minor damage, however there was no cargo spillage or water ingress reported. While no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, an Israeli official reported it appeared Iran carried out the attack with a Shahed-136 exploding drone, the same type of drone that has been previously supplied by Iran to Russia in Ukraine.

Namibia-Botswana
Oil and Gas Project Deemed a Sin
In response to the Canadian company Reconnaissance Energy Africa (ReconAfrica) receiving exploration licenses for a 13,253 sq miles (34,325 sq km) area straddling the border of Botswana and Namibia, local Indigenous peoples and religious leaders have spoken out against the project, calling it a sin. Botswana is home to one of the largest inland deltas in the world, the Okavango Delta, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site and provides shelter for a particularly delicate ecosystem. ReconAfrica however, believes it holds a wealth of oil and gas under the ground in northern Botswana and neighboring Namibia. Residents have expressed concerns over the effects this drilling will have on the underground water reservoirs in Namibia that connect to the Okavango River, which carries water to the delta in neighboring Botswana. ReconAfrica’s Namibian subsidiary has reported the project is in its early stages in Botswana, and the company is keen to hear from affected communities. In Namibia, three test wells have already been drilled.

Q: Known as the “River That Caught Fire,” which U.S. river helped start a nationwide environmental movement in the 1960s?
A: The Cuyahoga River, Ohio
At least 13 fires were reported on the Cuyahoga River during the industrial age. On June 22, 1969, a fire burned on the Cuyahoga for two hours, due to the flammable petroleum products that had been dumped directly into it. This incident took place at a time when the U.S. was becoming more environmentally aware, and ultimately prompted many water pollution regulations, including the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and the creation of the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
