United States: Democrats Win Senate Majority

United States
Democrats Win Senate Majority

The Democratic Party has secured a 51-49 majority in the United States Senate after Democrat Raphael Warnock won re-election in a run-off election to represent the state of Georgia. This gives Democrats stronger voting power in the Senate, with greater ability to oversee committees and confirm nominees appointed by the President. Had the Democrats not won in Georgia, parties would be more dependent on Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote in a 50-50 Senate. However, with only a narrow majority, Democrats will still require bipartisan support on contentious issues such as increasing or decreasing taxes and federal spending, especially as the Republican Party holds a small majority of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Oil Price Cap Goes Into Effect
A build up of tankers has grown off the coast of Turkey after the G7 price cap on Russian crude oil went into effect on Monday. The cap, which sets a $60-per-barrel price limit on seaborne crude, is an attempt to reduce Russian fossil fuel revenue, while ensuring oil continues to flow and the shipping and maritime insurance industries don’t collapse. The price cap stipulations mean tankers carrying Russian crude oil must not carry western maritime insurance unless the barrels are sold under the G7 price cap. At least 19 crude oil tankers waiting to cross Turkish waters have been halted. The tanker buildup is the first indicator of the price cap’s impact on the international oil market.

Magma in Yellowstone’s Volcano
A new study published in the journal, Science, has revealed the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park holds twice the amount of magma as previously thought. Researchers used seismic tomography – recording ground vibrations to create a 3D image of what’s happening beneath Earth’s surface – to create an image of the magma chamber framework, uncovering where the magma was located. Previous images showed a low concentration of magma, at only 10 percent, however the new study determined 16 to 20 percent of the volcano contains magma. The researchers noted this discovery does not mean the supervolcano is getting ready to erupt nor the amount of magma in the chamber has increased, only that scientists now have a clearer picture of what is there.

This map depicts how a ‘super eruption’ of the molten lava under Yellowstone National Park would spread ash across the United States. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: One of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Italy, where can you travel to find the home of the famous liqueur limoncello?

A: Amalfi Coast
Located on southern Italy’s west coast, along the Gulf of Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, or Costiera Amalfitana, is a roughly 31 mile (50 km) stretch of coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The windy coastline is met with the steep rocky cliffs of the Sorrentine Peninsula which slope towards the sea, and along the entire stretch are closely-packed multicolored towns and homes. There are 13 Italian municipalities/towns located on the Amalfi Coast connected via the 25 mile (40 km) long Strada Statale 163 highway, also known as “Amalfi Drive.” Humans have inhabited this coast since ancient times, as it served as a major stop for Aegean sailors who set up shop in the Campania region. Lemon gardens of Amalfi, which use vertical farming techniques, produce the famous Limoncello liqueur, along with a host of organic lemon products. Lemon cultivation in the area has a continuous blooming season as bees can pollinate the trees in the favorable environment year-round. Limoncello is made of just a few ingredients, including spirits, hand-peeled lemons, water, and sugar. To create the famous and delicious taste of the Amalfitan Limoncello, and the ingredients are mixed together in a special way.
