Warplanes Approach from China
China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), engaged in large-scale combat drills this past Sunday and Monday, sending naval ships and warplanes towards Taiwan. Several of the planes passed the median line of the Taiwan Strait separating mainland China from Taiwan, a de facto maritime border between them. The PLA’s exercises coincided with the arrival of a delegation of German lawmakers to meet with Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen. China regards Taiwan as a breakaway region, while the United States and many other countries have taken an ambiguous stance on its status, not recognizing Taiwan as an independent country, but maintaining similar diplomatic relations to that of an independent country and providing defensive support. The status of Taiwan has ramifications for international navigation rights and access to resources in waters surrounding Taiwan and the greater South China Sea.

PM Negotiates IMF Support
Pakistan held talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday in an effort to restart a stalled bailout program as the country heads towards defaulting on its foreign debt. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced he was working to persuade the IMF to pause its demands on economic reforms before providing financial aid as Pakistan recovers from catastrophic floods that inundated one-third of the country in July and August of last year. The IMF has stipulated that Pakistan withdraw its remaining subsidies on petroleum and electricity. Pakistan’s economy has crumbled alongside an ongoing political crisis, with the rupee plummeting in value and decades-high inflation levels sweeping the country. A $6 billion IMF deal had been negotiated by Pakistan’s previous government prior to Sharif taking office, however only half the funds were received, and the last payment was made in August.

Ozone Layer Healing
The United Nations issued a report confirming the Earth’s ozone layer is on track to recover within the next 40 years. Ozone, an allotrope made up of three oxygen atoms, effectively blocks ultraviolet radiation from the sun when it forms a layer in the upper atmosphere. In the mid-1980s, scientists discovered that parts of the ozone layer, especially in the lower part of the southern hemisphere, had been damaged by long-term exposure to man-made chemicals used as refrigerants, solvents, and propellants. The UN adopted protocols for the gradual replacement of such chemicals with alternatives that would not harm the ozone layer, with banned substances now down nearly 99% from their highs in the early 1980s.
This map depicts the state of the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica on October 5, 2022, which the new UN report confirms is slowly being restored. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: Prior to 1960, Thai immigration to America was almost nonexistent. Today, what state boasts the largest Thai population outside of Thailand?
A: California
The first significant wave of Thai immigrants to America coincided with U.S. armed forces arriving in Thailand during the Vietnam War. By the 1970’s, around 5,000 Thais had emigrated to America, and by the 80s, around 6,500 Thais were arriving in the country every year. Today, the country is home to over 300,000 people of Thai descent. The Thai enclave of East Hollywood happens to be the only designated Thai Town in the world. With Southern California home to about 100,000 Thai people, 30,000 of them call Los Angeles home. While there are population clusters of Thai people in Washington D.C. and the New York City metro, the Los Angeles area is the most concentrated Thai diaspora in North America.
