Plane Crash Kills 70
Yeti Airlines flight 691 crashed on Sunday only 27 minutes into a trip from Kathmandu, Nepal, to the tourist city of Pokhara, killing at least 70 of the 72 people aboard. While Nepal can be a challenging place to fly, conditions at the time of the crash were considered good, with low wind and clear skies. A video shot from the ground shows the plane likely stalled before crashing into a nearly 1,000 ft (300 m) deep gorge about one mile (1.6 km) away from the newly opened Pokhara International Airport. Rescue teams searching for the last two missing passengers are being hampered by foggy weather and difficult terrain. Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority reported a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder have been retrieved from the site. The plane’s pilot, who also died in the crash, joined Nepal’s aviation sector after her husband died in a small passenger plane crash in 2006.

World Leaders Gather in Davos
The World Economic Forum (WEF) opened Monday in Davos, Switzerland, bringing together government officials with leaders of business and civil society to address global challenges in the year ahead. Fifty-two heads of state and government are expected to attend, though German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is the only leader of the G7 countries expected, and no representatives of Russia will be in attendance due to the fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine almost one year ago. That conflict, along with the challenges of high global inflation and advancing climate change are the leading topics of conversation. This is the first time the event has been held in-person since the winter of early 2020, just before COVID-19 caused mass lockdowns around the world.
This map depicts the countries are attending the World Economic Form in Davos, Switzerland, which opened for an in-person gathering for the first time since the winter of 2020. Click on the map to learn more.

JWST Maps Earliest Galaxies
New findings from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal how galaxies that formed in the early universe exhibit greater variety and maturity than astronomers anticipated. A group of scientists presented these findings at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society last week in Seattle, Washington. The team compared images of highly red-shifted galaxies collected by the JWST with images of the same galaxies previously captured by the older Hubble Space Telescope. Red-shift refers to the wavelengths of light being captured from the galaxies, with rays from further along the infrared spectrum corresponding to older objects. The galaxies observed range from 11 to 13 billion years old, some less than one billion years younger than the universe itself. The oldest galaxies showed greater structural variety than the researchers anticipated, meaning astronomers will now have to revise their understanding of the timeline of galactic formation.
This map depicts the early galaxies identified by researchers using data collected by the James Webb Space Telescope. Researchers recently shared results showing early galaxies were more developed than astronomers previously believed. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: The longest undersea tunnel in the world, the Channel Tunnel or “Chunnel,” consists of how many individual underwater tunnels?
A: Three
The Channel Tunnel is an underwater tunnel connecting southern England and northern France. Operated by the company Getlink, the Channel Tunnel is comprised of three parallel tunnels, two rail tunnels for freight and passenger trains (one running south and the other running north), and one service tunnel. The Channel Tunnel stretches nearly 32 miles (51 km) under the English Channel, making it the longest undersea tunnel in the world, with the deepest point of the tunnel reaching around 246 ft (75 m) below sea level. The idea of an underwater tunnel below the English Channel was first proposed in 1802 and gained the support of Napoleon Bonaparte, among others. Construction however did not begin until 1988 and was completed in 1993. Getlink’s biggest customer, Eurostar, runs high-speed passenger services through the tunnel between London and many European cities on the continent, and first began its services in November of 1994.
