Yemen: Saudis and Houthis in Peace Talks

Yemen
Saudis and Houthis in Peace Talks
Peace talks held this week between Saudi Arabia and the leadership of Yemen’s Houthi movement is yielding cautious optimism, as the two sides conclude this round of negotiations with an exchange of almost 900 prisoners of war. Saudi Arabia has been leading a multi-national coalition against the Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, and initiated talks in the hope of ending the nearly nine-year war. The move to end hostilities in Yemen would be a natural step after the restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran last month. The war in Yemen has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and rendered millions more dependent on humanitarian aid.

This map depicts the current areas of Yemen under the control of the three major factions of the war. Saudi Arabia, which supports the internationally-recognized Yemeni government, initiated peace talks with the Houthi rebels in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa this week. Click on the map to learn more.

Australia
Cyclone Ilsa Slams Northwest
Tropical Cyclone Ilsa struck the northwest regions of Australia this morning as a Category-5 storm, setting a potential Australian wind-speed record in the process. The region is sparsely populated, and the larger settlements remained largely unaffected, including the world’s largest iron ore export hub and Port Hedland. However, emergency crews have been deployed to some smaller remote towns. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology reports having recorded a ten-minute sustained wind speed of 135 miles per hour (218 kph) at Bedout Island, which will be a new national record if confirmed. While weakened after moving inland, Ilsa remains a potent storm with the capacity to cause severe damage over the coming days.

This map depicts the path of Tropical Cyclone Ilsa, which struck northwest Australia this morning as a Category-5 storm and potentially setting a national wind speed record. Click on the map to learn more.

Colombia-Panama
Agreement to Slow Migration
The new “Trilateral Joint Statement” agreement between the United States, Panama, and Colombia aims to stem illegal migration through the notorious Darien Gap. The goals of the agreement, while vague, included the end of illicit movement of people and goods, opening new lawful and flexible pathways for migrants, and launching a plan to promote economic and sustainable opportunities. The Darien Gap is the natural choke point to stop intra-continental migration. While the three countries now have a 60-day plan to slow the migrant flow, it is projected to cost US taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and is being questioned by rights groups who have raised concerns over the US-led plan. Nearly 250,000 migrants and refugees crossed through the Darien Gap last year, twice as many compared to 2021, with around 88,000 crossings recorded in the first three months of 2023. The unprecedented number of migrants crossing the dangerous Darien Gap could potentially soar to as many as 400,000 this year.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: The Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of what eastern US mountain range?

A: Blue Ridge Mountains
The scenic Skyline Drive is located in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia which encompasses a portion of the Blue Ridge mountain range. The Blue Ridge Mountains extend 550 miles (885 km) from Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia, and are a part of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. Known for their blue hue when seen from a distance, the Skyline Drive offers drivers a sea of blue at many of the overlooks. The drive is considered a National Scenic Byway with 75 scenic overlooks and connects drivers to trailheads, visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, and lodges. Skyline Drive begins in the north at Front Royal at mile 0, with mileposts on the west side of the road marked along the drive until its end. Black bears, wild turkey, deer and many other animals that call Shenandoah home regularly cross the Skyline Drive on their daily commutes, so drivers are cautioned to be mindful of animal crossings. The most popular time to travel along the drive is in the Fall when the foliage turns orange and red.
