Sudan
Fighting Escalates
A resurgence of fighting has broken out across the Sudanese state of North Darfur. Over 40 deaths have been reported as the ongoing humanitarian crisis sweeping the African nation worsens. The increased violence comes on the back of the expiration of a truce between rival groups, Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), early Sunday morning. Fighting in North Darfur, the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, and smaller pockets across the country have led to a mass movement of asylum seekers both within Sudan and into neighbouring countries. Tensions are expected to increase over the following weeks with the UN calling for immediate aid.

United States
Air Quality Alert
As the smoke from burning wildfires in Canada makes its way south, cities along the east coast of the United States are feeling the effects. The smoke originated from Quebec, where there are more than 160 active forest fires. Topping the list of the hardest-hit cities is New York City, where an official unhealthy air quality alert has been issued and vulnerable people have been advised to wear masks outside to protect their health for the first time in years. Additionally, at least ten school districts in central New York State have cancelled outdoor activities. Smoke is predicted to continue to blanket New York and northern New Jersey through the day, and experts have advised residents to limit time spent outside as much as possible.

New Milky Way Map
Recent advancements in tracing young galactic objects, such as high-mass star-forming regions observed by the European Space Agency’s Gaia telescope, have provided more accurate distance measurements in mapping our Milky Way galaxy. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations and the Gaia mission have contributed to the understanding of the Milky Way’s spiral structure in the solar neighborhood. Observations of external spiral galaxies have also been used as references, revealing three types of galactic morphology: grand-design, flocculent, and multiple-arm spirals. The Milky Way is believed to have four continuous spiral arms extending from the inner to outer regions. Determining the precise spiral structure of the Milky Way has been challenging due to our position within the Galactic disk and the presence of multiple structural features obscuring our line of sight.
This map depicts the Milky Way from the north Galactic pole, showing the locations of its arms. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: Where in the United States can you find the only floating zip (postal) code?
A: Detroit, Michigan, 48222
Early explorers of North America never did find the Northwest Passage – a hoped-for route through or around the continent to Asia. But once the riches of the New World became apparent, the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway became, if not a substitute, at least a consolation prize. From the far western shore of Lake Superior at Duluth, Minnesota, a series of constructed locks and channels through the Great Lakes allows ocean-capable freighters to carry mining and agricultural products from deep in America’s heartland to the North Atlantic and beyond via the St. Lawrence River. In the middle of the Seaway sits the city of Detroit, Michigan, where in 1874 the Westcott company began facilitating ship-to-shore communications before the era of radio. Today, the J.W. Westcott II, a small diesel boat launched in 1949, makes deliveries to passing ships addressed to “Vessel Name, Marine Post Office, Detroit, Michigan, 48222,” meaning mail and packages can be received on a ship going to or originating from anywhere in the world as it travels along the Detroit River between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
