Israel-Lebanon
Ceasefire in Effect
After more than a year of violence, U.S. President Joseph Biden announced that Israel and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have reached a ceasefire deal. The truce will last 60 days. Hostilities stopped at 4:00am Wednesday morning and this ceasefire is intended to bring permanent peace. Hezbollah first launched rockets at Israel in October, 2023 in response to Israel’s military offensive against the militant group Hamas in Gaza, displacing 60,000 and killing 140 people in northern Israel. In the past months, Israel responded with an offensive in Lebanon, displacing an estimated 1.2 million and killing 3,768 people. Following the ceasefire, Israeli troops are expected to leave southern Lebanon as Hezbollah militants withdraw north of the Litani River. The Lebanese army, and peacekeepers from the US and France, will be deployed to oversee this transition. The Lebanese army is also tasked with expanding its role in the south and managing armed activity.

Islamabad Protests for Former PM
Pakistani authorities arrested over 1,000 protestors who stormed the capital, Islamabad, this week to demand the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. More than 10,000 protesters surged into the city, defying a lockdown and a ban on public gatherings to skirmish with 20,000 security forces. Khan has been jailed since August 2023, sidelined by dozens of legal cases he claims were formed to prevent his comeback in elections this year marred by rigging allegations. Since the February vote, his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has defied a government crackdown with regular rallies, but Tuesday’s gathering was by far the largest in the capital since the election. Mobile internet was cut across Islamabad, schools shut on Monday remained closed Wednesday, and roadblocks prevented thousands of workers from reaching their jobs.

Africa
Mpox Spreads as Vaccine Lags
Over the past year, cases of a new strain of mpox known as “clade 1b” began to rise significantly across central Africa, leading the World Health Organization (WHO) to announce its highest alert, declaring mpox a public health emergency of international concern. In the last month, this strain has been detected in the UK, the US, Germany, Sweden, and India. Mpox, first reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 1970, re-emerged in the DRC and across Central Africa in 2024. This new, more severe clade is affecting the general population, including children, who face higher mortality rates. Over 51,000 people were vaccinated in the DRC this November. Vaccine delivery faces challenges, including limited supply, transport inefficiencies, and complex target populations, requiring significant investments in logistics, training, and social mobilization. There are no shots available yet for children, the most vulnerable group.
This map depicts rates of infection in Mpox-affected countries in Africa between January 1st, 2022, and November 17th, 2024. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: The first fossilized dinosaur egg was discovered in which desert in Asia, the continent’s largest?
A: Gobi Desert
The Gobi Desert straddles Mongolia’s southern border with China’s autonomous region of Inner Mongolia. It is a cold desert formed in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The world’s highest mountain chain blocks clouds from the Indian Ocean from making it over the Tibetan Plateau and into the Gobi area. During the late Cretaceous, some 70-80 million years ago, the Gobi region was very different. Parts of it were covered by dense conifer forests, crisscrossed by streams and dotted with lakes. Today, though, thanks to the desert’s barren, rock-strewn landscapes, paleontologists have found a number of fossils. The first-ever positively identified dinosaur eggs became one of many remarkable finds from a rocky outcrop called the Flaming Cliffs.
