Deadly Texas Flash Flooding
At least 82 people have died and 41 remain missing following catastrophic flash flooding triggered by heavy rainfall across Texas on Friday. Kerr County was the hardest hit, accounting for 68 of the fatalities, including 28 children. Up to 10 inches (25 cm) of rain fell within a few hours overnight in central Kerr County on Friday, causing the Guadalupe River to overflow. In response, President Donald Trump issued a disaster declaration for the county on Sunday, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been deployed to assist with recovery efforts. The National Weather Service has warned that slow-moving thunderstorms could bring additional rainfall today, increasing the risk of further flooding in already saturated parts of central Texas. A flood watch remains in effect for Austin, San Antonio, and Kerr County until 7pm local time. Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall has also caused significant flooding in other states, including North Carolina.

17th BRICS Summit Held
The 17th annual summit of the BRICS intergovernmental organization is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 6th and 7th of July. The acronym is derived from the letters of the five founding countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Today, the bloc includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as full members and has incorporated 10 strategic partner countries. The BRICS countries account for 56% of the world’s population and 44% of global economic output, and this year’s summit theme focuses on strengthening Global South Cooperation. Some key points on the agenda include U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, global health cooperation, AI governance and climate change. The Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend this year’s summit in person for the first time since taking power in 2012, and Russian President Vladimir Putin will also skip the summit as he is wanted by the International Criminal Court for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025
Brazil’s Fluminese FC, France’s Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) FC, Spain’s Real Madrid CF, and England’s Chelsea FC have all qualified to the semi-final stage of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup (CWC). The FIFA Club World Cup is a tournament completely separate from the FIFA World Cup, as it is strictly for football clubs, not national teams. This is why Kylian Mbappé plays for Spain’s Real Madrid CF in the 2025 Club World Cup, despite being a captain for the French national team. The Club World Cup has no impact on FIFA World Cup qualification or rankings for countries. However, the tournament is being hosted across the United States, which is one of the host countries for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 5 cities hosting the 2025 Club World Cup are also host cities for the upcoming 2026 World Cup: Miami, Seattle, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York/New Jersey. The United States, Mexico, and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup together. The 2025 Club World Cup semifinal games will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Q: What is Australia’s smallest and least populous state?
A: Tasmania
Tasmania, the mountainous island state of Australia, lies about 150 miles (240 km) south of the state of Victoria, separated from it by the Bass Strait. The state comprises a main island called Tasmania; Bruny Island; King and Flinders islands in Bass Strait; and subantarctic Macquarie Island, about 900 miles (1,450 km) to the southeast. Tasmania is the smallest of Australia’s states, slightly larger than Sri Lanka. Australia’s least populous state, Tasmania’s population is around 550,000 people. The Tasmanian Wilderness covers more than 3.9 million acres (1.58 million ha), almost a quarter of the State of Tasmania. This is one of the world’s largest temperate wilderness areas and a cultural landscape for Tasmanian Aboriginal people, who have lived there over 40,000 years.
