Ukrainian Drones Target Moscow
The Russian capital Moscow came under attack from Ukrainian drones over the past weekend, with new reports giving insights into the damages and response by Russian authorities. Four people in the Moscow area are reported to have died. Official Russian media reported that air defenses repelled one of the largest Ukrainian attacks since the beginning of what Russia calls the “special military operation,” its full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched in 2022. Ukraine has responded by developing a military drone industry that has increased its capacity for strikes deep in Russian territory, especially targeting the oil industry, whose revenues pay for Russia’s military. Sources have confirmed that strikes on Sunday resulted in the Moscow Oil Refinery and another refinery in Ryazan stopping operations. While acknowledging the attack, the Russian government has increasingly cracked down on independent reporting to maintain government media’s control on information, with a new law last week banning sharing of drone-strike footage without government approval.

U.S. Delays Troop Deployment
Following the earlier announcement that the United States will reduce the number of troops stationed in Europe, a planned rotation of 4,000 armored brigade troops to Poland has been delayed. Upon receiving notice that the rotation was not taking place, Polish authorities expressed alarm, prompting U.S. officials to give reassurance that the armored brigade’s deployment was merely delayed, not cancelled. The Pentagon announced on May 1 that the United States military would reduce the number of troops stationed in Europe by 5,000, mainly out of Germany. The U.S. has maintained a strong presence in Germany as a central location ideal for European operations and as a midway point from the United States to activity in the Middle East. The announced reduction will bring overall American troop deployments in Europe to the same level as 2021, before Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

Horse Domestication Seen Earlier
A new study from a research team at the University of Helsinki reveals evidence showing that the domestication of the horse began much earlier than previously believed. While full domestication of the horse is still placed at around 2000 BCE, evidence from multiple sites across Eurasia shows taming and domestication was a stop-start process over hundreds of years, with horses still being utilized in sophisticated ways prior to full domestication. Somewhere around 3,500 to 3000 BCE, human populations from the steppe in Central Asia began moving outward, bringing the wheel with them via carts originally pulled by cattle. Those same people recognized around that time that a rider on horseback could travel long distances much more quickly, connecting populations for trade and culture. This enhanced mobility is believed to have facilitated the expansion of early Indo-European languages, the forerunners of hundreds of related languages currently spoken throughout Europe and into central and south Asia.
This map depicts the regions where archaeological finds indicated the utilization of horses by human populations thousands of years earlier than previously known. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: What is the only country in Latin America with almost 100 percent hydroelectric generation capacity?
A: Paraguay
Along with Albania, Paraguay is the country with the cleanest electric power production in the world, as 99.9% of its electricity generation produces zero carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, it is among the countries with the highest production of hydroelectricity per capita, mainly produced by its two large binational dams: Itaipú and Yacyretá. The Itaipú Dam’s hydroelectric power plant, co-owned by Paraguay and Brazil, produced the second-most electricity of any dam in the world as of 2020, only surpassed by the Three Gorges Dam plant in China in electricity production. In 2018, it produced 90.8% of the electricity for Paraguay.
