Afghanistan
Attack on Wedding
63 people were killed and at least 200 wounded after a suicide bomber attacked a wedding ceremony in Kabul on Saturday. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. The bombing occurred as the United States was finalizing a deal with the Taliban to withdraw troops from Afghanistan after 18 years. Afghan president Ashraf Ghani blamed the Taliban for providing a platform for terrorists and has postponed celebrations marking the 100-year anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence from the British Empire.

Canary Islands
Wildfires Sweep Gran Canaria
About 8,000 people have been evacuated from the Canary Islands this weekend as wildfires continue to sweep Gran Canaria, a popular tourist destination. The fires started on Saturday near the town of Tejeda and have consumed more than 3,400 hectares (8,400 acres) of land. Ten planes and helicopters and more than 700 firefighters have been deployed to contain the blaze, but officials say their efforts have been hindered by high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity. This is the third fire on the Canary Islands this month, and two others in the past eight days have forced some towns to evacuate.

Gibraltar
Tanker Released, Heads to Greece
An Iranian tanker detained in Gibraltar since July has been released and is heading into the Mediterranean. The ship, which has changed its name from Grace 1 to Adrian Darya 1, was seized last month on suspicion of illegally transporting oil to Syria. A last-minute request from the U.S. to issue a new detention order was rejected because American sanctions against Iran do not apply in the European Union. Iran warned the U.S. not to stop the ship, which is carrying 2.1 million barrels of oil (worth $140 million), as it heads toward the Greek port of Kalamata.

Q: Which three countries meet at Bratislava, Slovakia, the only capital city in the world located on a tripoint (a geographical point at which three countries meet)?
A: Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia
Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, is located at the border between Austria, Hungary, and of course, Slovakia’s western tip. All three countries were once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which dissolved at the end of the First World War. Slovakia was then a part of Czechoslovakia until gaining independence in 1993.
