Firefight at Kabul Airport Kills One
Western forces engaged in a firefight with Afghan gunmen at Kabul airport on Monday morning, as the airport is still busy with Afghans seeking to flee the country after the Taliban took control over the city last week. One Afghan guard was killed and three others injured during the exchange of shots, which was joined by US and German military forces. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. The Taliban is also guarding the airport in an effort to maintain order, and have not opened fire at the airport against Western or Afghan military personnel. The airport has been a scene of chaos in the past week, as the August 31 deadline for Western forces to leave the country comes closer.

Henri Makes Landfall
The remnants of Hurricane Henri continue to bring heavy rainfall to the northeast after making landfall as a tropical storm on Sunday. Henri brought peak wind gusts of 78 mph (126 kmh) to Point Judith, Rhode Island, with torrential rains stranding motorists and leaving 140,000 homes without power. Heavy rains will continue to move inland to eastern New York State and western New England, bringing continued risk of flooding. Henri is the second tropical storm to hit the northeast this season following Elsa last month. As a result, hurricane borders were closed in Providence, Rhode Island, and New Bedford, Massachusetts for the first time since Sandy in 2012.

One Survivor After Boat Capsizes
Over 50 people are feared dead after a migrant boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain’s Canary Islands. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Service revealed a young woman was the sole survivor, found clinging to a dinghy. The original vessel had taken off from the coast of Western Sahara a week prior. The woman was airlifted to a hospital on the island of Gran Canaria. The United Nations reported at least 250 people have died in the first half of 2021 embarking on the dangerous route to the Spanish archipelago, while migrant rights group Walking Border has counted around 2,000 deaths. Over 7,500 migrants and refugees have made the crossing this year.

Q: The red rock canyons of which U.S. national park were uplifted from sedimentary rock that was underwater over 13 million years ago?
A: Zion National Park
Zion ranges in color from a rich rust-red at lower elevations with summits almost white. Its dramatic canyons were once carved out by rivers carrying sediment, eroding the park’s walls into the distinct shapes they are now. One canyon wall, known as the Great White Throne, stands almost 2,400 ft (730 m) above the canyon floor. The park is also known for its abundant fossil records, revealing prehistoric peoples once inhabited the area.
