Afghanistan
U.S. Soldier Killed
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the death of an American solider after U.S. and Afghan forces were targeted with improvised explosive devices during a raid. The attack took place in the Kunduz province of northern Afghanistan.  The name of the victim and exact location of the attack have not been released by U.S. military. The attack comes during ongoing peace negotiations between the U.S. and Taliban which were reopened earlier this month.

United States
Highway Pileup
More than 60 vehicles were caught in a highway pileup on Interstate 64 outside of Williamsburg, Virginia yesterday morning.  50 people have sustained injuries and 2 are critically injured.  Authorities state the “chain reaction” pileup was likely instigated by icy road conditions and fog in the morning hours though an investigation is ongoing.  It took responders several hours to clear the highway and reopen it for traffic.  Images of the site show a mess of cars and trucks with smashed windows and fenders, and some vehicles on top of others.

Cambodia
China Constructs Airstrip
A Chinese military airstrip under construction at Dara Sakor International Airport along Cambodia’s remote southwestern coastline is sparking concern that China is planning to base troops in the Southeast Asian country. The airstrip, due for completion next year, will be Cambodia’s largest at 10,500 feet. Dara Sakor airport is located on the Gulf of Thailand, a neighbor to the South China Sea where Chinese forces have recently expanded military presence. The airport is also located near the Ream Naval Base, which was reportedly leased to the Chinese Navy in July. The Cambodian government claims the area will be used to develop a resort and investment zone and will not host Chinese troops.
