Albania
Deadly Quake
At least 14 people were killed and more than 600 injured after a powerful earthquake hit Albania. According to reports, the 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck shortly before 4 a.m. local time (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday, with an epicenter 34 kilometers (about 20 miles) northwest of the capital Tirana in the Adriatic Sea. The quake jostled the capital and its heavily-populated surrounding regions, causing several buildings to collapse. The worst damage was in and around the coastal city of Durres, a tourism destination. In nearby Bosnia, another quake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck southeast of the capital of Sarajevo. There were no immediate reports of casualties and only minor damage in that earthquake.

Mali
French Helicopter Crash
Thirteen French soldiers were killed during a security operation in Mali on Monday night. Two helicopters collided while supporting a ground operation engaged in combat with Islamic militants. France launched a military operation in Mali in 2013 to counter violent jihadism that has spread across the region. France has deployed 4,500 troops to West Africa through Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad, representing its largest overseas military operation. To date, 38 French troops have been killed in Mali since the start of the operation. Monday night’s incident represents the largest loss of French troops in a single day since 1983.

Romania
Cargo Ship Capsized
As of Monday, rescuers in Romania were racing to save more than 14,000 sheep trapped inside a cargo ship after the vessel reportedly capsized in the Black Sea en route to Saudi Arabia. The Queen Hind overturned after leaving the Port of Midia, near the city of Constanța. The Palau-flagged ship’s crew, which comprised of 20 Syrians and one Lebanese, were rescued along with just 33 surviving animals. According to reports, rescue efforts helmed by military, police, and divers were attempting to restore the ship and carry it to shore. Thousands of sheep are still stuck in the wreckage, many of which are expected to have drowned. Authorities are investigating the cause of the sinking.
