Travel Mayhem
Lufthansa Airlines has confirmed over 800 flights to European destinations have been canceled as of late Tuesday night. As the discontent in Europe’s workers spreads to Germany, union workers went on strike, effectively canceling half of the airports’ flights, and affecting 90,000 passengers. Public sector workers such as ground handlers at Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, and Bremen airports are also participating in the walkout. Air France is expected to face further disruptions. A spokeswoman for Lufthansa said, “politicians and legislators must define clear rules for strikes and industrial actions.” This map depicts all of the locations in Europe that Lufthansa Airlines flies between. Retiring Representatives
House speaker Paul Ryan, U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district and former VP nominee, has told colleagues that he has decided not to run for re-election this year. This adds to the query of Republicans maintaining control of the House. Recent special elections gave Democrats an Alabama Senate seat and a House seat in Pennsylvania. Critics fear a progressing anti-GOP wave may overturn the party’s majority in Congress. At least 42 House Republicans have announced retirement or resignation. Democrats need to win 24 House seats to take control of the House, which Republicans have held since 2011.This map depicts the House seats that will not have an incumbent official running in the 2018 election. Placemeter
A New York-based company, Placemeter, maps out pedestrian traffic on streets that commonly have heavy foot traffic. Their map released on their blog shows 14th street in Union Square updating the number of pedestrians walking in the area in real-time. The company can also show how many shoppers are frequenting different stores – which can be useful to companies who want to measure their foot traffic in relation to competitors in their area. Placemeter has created this map using live Arlo cameras, as well as through footage obtained from existing security cameras, to measure the movement of people walking on the street. The company uses a unique algorithm to distinguish between different types of movements on the street that are picked up by the cameras. This technology can be very useful to companies looking to open a storefront when deciding on a location. Smart Cities, the technology that maps out patterns obtained by the cameras, can be used to determine which areas are underutilized, have heavy foot traffic, or contain crime patterns.
