Antarctica
Iceberg Breaks Free
The largest iceberg in recorded history has just broken off from the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica. Scientists have been anticipating this since 2014 when the rate of melting accelerated drastically. For now, the iceberg isn’t predicted to move too far away from Antarctica. However, the iceberg, which is roughly four times larger than London, could eventually drift into shipping lanes.

This map shows the location and relative size of the iceberg. Click on the map to learn more.

Germany
Bode Museum Robbery Update
German police recently arrested several people during raids in Berlin over the March robbery of a 100 kilo gold coin, with a material value of $4 million, from the Bode Museum. The coin is known as the “Big Maple Leaf”  and bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. It is made of pure gold with a face value of $1 million. Despite the arrest, police are still unsure as to the location of the coin. Berlin Police speculate that the coin may have been melted down and divided into smaller chunks.

GeoQuestion

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Somewhere in the world, there is a lake filled with jellyfish that tourists can swim in! Where is this place?

A: Palau

Jellyfish Lake, located on an uninhabited island in Palau, was once connected to the ocean but is now isolated. Being isolated, the jellyfish have no predators and feed on the algae in the lake. And while they have stingers, they are too small to harm humans, making them safe to swim with.
