Australia
A Sad Conclusion
Australia has published a final report on the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370, thereby officially concluding the investigation. The flight went missing on March 8, 2014, and the Australian Transportation Safety Bureau had been in charge of the search for over 3 years. In their final 440 page report, they admit that it is “societally unacceptable in this modern age of aviation” for a mystery like this to go unsolved and for “the families of those on board not to know what became of the aircraft nor those on board.”

This map depicts the path of the Malaysian flight and where it lost contact with air traffic control. Click on the map to learn more.

France
‘A State of War’
French lawmakers have voted on an anti-terrorism bill that will increase police powers to search and restrict people’s movement. Rights groups worry that this bill will hurt civil liberties but the interior minister believes France to be in a ‘state of war’ and that the bill is necessary to protect the people from extremist attacks. More than 240 people have been killed by terrorist attacks in France since early 2015 when attackers claimed allegiance to the Islamic State in a series of mass shootings.

Madagascar
Widespread Disease
According to the World Health Report, an outbreak of the plague has claimed 20 lives in Madagascar and continues to spread across cities all over the country. The government has banned public gatherings in Madagascar’s capital while the situation is dealt with. The World Health Organization (WHO) has supplied the country with antibiotics and medical equipment to combat the spreading epidemic. Plague is, unfortunately, fairly common in Madagascar where about 400 cases of the disease are reported annually.

This map shows the cities where the plague has spread in Madagascar. Click on the map to learn more about the story.
