New Lockdown in Melbourne
Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne, is enforcing new lockdown measures for more than five million residents, as COVID-19 cases have surged in recent days. This map, by AFP, shows the lockdown will primarily cover the Melbourne metropolitan area, but the closing of the state’s borders will effectively seal Victoria off from the rest of the country. The latest measures represent Australia’s strictest response to COVID-19 to date. Those crossing the Victoria-New South Wales border without permission will face a fine or imprisonment. The Premier of Victoria has said the lockdown will last at least six weeks.
This map depicts the Australian city of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, where a new six-week lockdown in to be imposed. All COVID-19 updates will be displayed in a red box.

Mongolia and China
Bubonic Plague Confirmed
A herdsman in the Inner Mongolia Province of China was confirmed to have the bubonic plague. The case was confirmed on Saturday and he is now in stable condition being treated at a hospital in Bayan Nur. Officials released a low-level alert on Sunday banning hunting and eating of wildlife, specifically marmots, that could potentially carry the plague. Known as the “Black Death” the bubonic plague can turn into pneumonic plague and become fatal. While it was largely eradicated, occasional cases are still reported and the last known outbreak was in 2009. Amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not consider the plague outbreak to be a high risk. The region is issuing further caution after three additional cases were reported in Mongolia from consumption of marmots.

United States
Atlantic Coast Pipeline Canceled
After six years of delays and legal conflicts, Dominion and Duke, two energy companies behind the multi-billion dollar Atlantic Coast Pipeline, are shutting down the project. The proposed pipeline faced a great deal of backlash from communities along its 600-mile route through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, with legal costs almost doubling the amount of money needed for completion. In January, a federal judge dismissed plans to build a natural gas compressor in historic Union Hill, VA, but last month the Supreme Court ruled the pipeline was free to tunnel under the Appalachian Trail. Ultimately, the companies cited rising costs and delays as their reason for halting the project.

Q: Which country is home to the smallest desert in Africa, with a diameter of only 200 meters?
A: South Africa
The Red Desert in South Africa has an area of only 11 hecaters and was unintentionally created by the Zulu Tribe. The Zulu’s cattle overgrazed the area, and once the wind eroded the soil, a desert was formed.
