Bangladesh
No More Room
Bangladesh has told the UN Security Council that the country will no longer accept refugees from Myanmar. Over the past 18 months, more than 700,000 Rohingya fled across the border to Bangladesh due to Myanmar’s campaign of violence against the Rohingya, which the UN has described as ethnic cleansing and possible genocide. Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Shahidul Haque, stated that the situation in Cox’s Bazar – which has become the world’s largest refugee camp– has become untenable due to the amount of Rohingya refugees currently living there. He also expressed his frustration with the UN Security Council and the international community at their lack of concrete action to solve the crisis, along with Myanmar’s “hollow promises and various obstructionist approaches” during negotiations for the Rohingya people’s return.

South China Sea
U.S. Supports Philippines*
Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, gave official support to the Philippine government stating that U.S. would come to its defense if its forces, aircraft or ships come under attack in the South China Sea. The South China Sea remains a contested area as China, Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei have overlapping claims to the sea. This week, Indonesia added to the competing claims by declaring fishing rights and moving ahead with establishing a fishing zone around the Natuna Islands.

Pakistan
Airspace Restricted
Amid rising tensions with India, Pakistan closed its airspace causing hundreds of flights to be delayed, cancelled or drastically rerouted. At Thailand’s international airport, all flights to Europe were cancelled with over 5,000 people checked in unable to board flights. Thai Airways had to gain permission from China to use its airspace, allowing them to resume flights early Friday morning. World powers have urged India and Pakistan, both nuclear armed countries, to deescalate tensions between them.

Q: What are the eight major islands that make up the archipelago of Hawaii?
A: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands were formed by a stagnant “hot spot” in the Pacific Ocean out of which magma spews. As tectonic plates slowly move over the hot spot for millions of year, islands accumulate and grow.
