Bangladesh
Prime Minister Flees Riots
The chief of the Bangladeshi army, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced he was taking control of the country and would form an interim government following the resignation of the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has fled the country. Hasina left Bangladesh by helicopter shortly after protestors stormed her palace in the capital, Dhaka. Bangladesh has been hit by rioting over the past few weeks over laws designed to privilege the families of veterans of Bangladesh’s war of independence in government hiring. The unrest came to encompass discontent over the view that Hasina’s government was using state institutions to crack down on dissent and maintain her Awami League party’s hold on power. Almost 300 people have died in the violence, at least 95 of whom died just yesterday in clashes in the capital. General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said the army will prioritize re-establishing order and seeking justice against those responsible for the killings.

Far-right Riots in the UK
Far-right protests in the UK have transitioned into riots after the attack on the Taylor Swift-themed dance party that left three young girls dead in Southport. Several towns and cities, including Bristol, Belfast, and Blackpool, have experienced disturbances since Friday night, leading to attacks and injuries to several police officers. In Rotherham, a mob of far-right rioters attempted to break into a hotel housing asylum-seekers. The right-wing organization Enough is Enough organized dozens of protests in the wake of the killings, during which the slogan “Save the kids” was heard. Protesters have persisted in targeting immigrants even after the attacker was identified as 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, a resident of a town close to Southport who was born in Cardiff, Wales. As of now, more than 100 protestors have been arrested.

Africa
New Strain of Mpox Spreads
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported mpox cases have risen by 160% on the continent this year compared with 2023. Mpox spreads from animals to humans and between people through close contact, contaminated objects, and respiratory droplets. If left untreated, mpox can be deadly. While 96% of cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), several countries have reported new outbreaks, including Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Central African Republic (CAR). Mpox cases have been recorded in 10 African nations. Some of the cases have been caused by what researchers are calling “clade 1b,” a new mpox lineage identified in the DRC last year that is highly transmissible and has a higher fatality rate than clade 2. There is evidence in the DRC that clade 1b and clade 2 outbreaks are occurring simultaneously. Though safe and effective mpox vaccines and antivirals are widely available in the United States and Europe, their use is uncommon in Africa.

Q: What country is home to the largest and least damaged tropical savanna?
A: Australia
Australia’s tropical savanna covers over 23 percent of its territory, stretching across the northern section of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. The Australian high-rainfall (more than 39in/100cm per year) tropical savanna landscape is dominated by mixed Eucalyptus woodland, grasses, and shrubs. Wet-season rains drive abundant grass growth, which subsequently dries and fuels regular bushfires – making these landscapes among the most fire-prone on Earth. In other parts of the world, tropical savanna is in decline due to land clearing, unsustainable grazing regimes and over population, but this vast area of Northern Australia is remarkably intact. This is attributed to general lack of extensive habitat loss and modification and Aboriginal land stewardship.
