Bolivia
President Evo Morales Resigns
Bolivian President Evo Morales stepped down on Sunday following mounting pressure surrounding the validity of his victory in the October 20 presidential election. Preceding the announcement, the Organization of American States (OAS) released a report recommending the election results be annulled due to irregularities and possible fraud. President Morales has been in office since 2006 and was Latin America’s longest serving head of state at the time of his resignation. Vice President Álvaro García Linera and Senate President Adriana Salvatierra also stepped down on Sunday, leaving no clear presidential successor. The Bolivian constitution mandates new elections be held within 90 days.

Jordan
Land Lease Expires
On Sunday, an agreement that allowed Israel to lease two border territories from Jordan expired. Under a 1994 peace treaty, Israel was given access to the regions of Naharayim and Zofar (known respectively as Baqura and Ghamr in Arabic) for 25 years. King Abdullah II of Jordan announced last year that he would not renew the lease, which many saw as a sign of strained relations between the two countries. Israeli farmers who own property in the territories will now require a visa to access their farmlands.

Australia
Catastrophic Fire Risk
Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, has declared a state of emergency as bushfires spread throughout the region. Residents have been warned to evacuate immediately ahead of an unprecedented “catastrophic fire risk”- the highest level of fire risk. So far, three people have been killed and over 150 homes destroyed due to fires over the weekend. Though bushfires are common in Australia, experts say the extreme level of the current fires are unusual since Australia has not even reached it’s peak summer weather.

Q: Covering an area 53,000 square miles, which oil-rich region does Venezuela and Guyana have a decades-long dispute over?
A: Essequibo region
Venezuela and Guyana have been disputing over the Essequibo region since the 1800s with Venezuela claiming everything west of the Essequibo River (approximately 40% of Guyana). Friction between the two countries has increased since the discovery of offshore oil and gas by ExxonMobil in 2015
