New Trade Tariffs
President Trump announced Thursday, his plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports as early as next week. President Trump framed his decision around economic and national security measures.  Stock markets world-wide fell after his announcement of a 25% tariff on steel imports and 10% tariff on aluminum imports.  The President hopes that this move will boost the U.S. economy, however, some critics have warned him to reconsider his position as consumers will likely feel the brunt of the tariff.  Others worry this tariff will escalate tensions with U.S. allies and trading partners, such as Canada, China, or Russia. This map depicts the value of U.S. steel imports by country. Burkina Faso
Attack on French Embassy
Friday afternoon local time, several places in Burkina Faso’s capital city, Ouagadougou, were attacked, including both the French Embassy and the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the headquarters of Burkina Faso’s armed forces. This is the latest jihadist attack on Burkina Faso in the last few years. At least four gunmen who had opened fire on the embassy have been killed. The communications minister reported the situation was under control and civilians were told to stay indoors. Several people were reported injured, but there are no further details on casualties. Explosions were still heard around the military headquarters in the western part of the city, far from the other area under attack, which contains embassies, the prime minister’s office, and the UN offices. Dark smoke rose from the army joint chief of staff’s office. This map depicts the French Embassy sure and Prime Minister’s Office in Burkina Faso. Click on the map to learn more.

Weekend Nor’ Easter
Due to the recent development of a low-pressure system in the eastern Great Lakes on the morning of March 1st, Storm Riley is now forming into an intense Nor’easter as it makes its way through the Northeast, bringing with it damaging winds, wet snow, and destructive coastal flooding. The Jersey shore is currently undergoing bombogenesis and heavy snow continues to blanket much of New York State. The high winds will most likely down trees and trigger widespread power outages in the East as the storm carries on through the weekend. This map depicts current radar and winds patterns in the Northeast. Click on the map to see more weather maps related to Storm Riley.
