France
Flash Flooding
Heavy floods have forced the evacuation of 1,600 people, most of them campers, in southern France. The storms which caused the flooding followed a period of unusually hot weather across Europe. More than 400 firefighters and police have been deployed to assist. The worst-hit areas are Gard, Ardeche, and Drome. A German youth summer camp in Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, Gard was hit particularly hard. 119 children were safely evacuated; however, one German man who was supervising the children remains missing. Six areas in southern France were placed on a flood alert, and about 17,000 homes are still without power in the south-west and north-east.This map depicts the area of flash flooding and the location of the summer camp. Click on the map to learn more.

Afganistan
Taliban Attack Afgan City
Heavily armed Taliban fighters have tried to overrun the strategic central Afgan city of Ghazni on Friday, attacking security forces and killing at least 14 police officers before being pushed back by U.S.-backed forces. At midnight, almost 75 miles south of the Afgan capital of Kabul, hundreds of attackers entered Ghazni from two directions and targeted all the security checkpoints in the city. U.S. forces provided air support, responding to the attack using helicopters and drones; the fighting ceased early Friday morning. Officials are investigating how the Taliban forces managed to infiltrate so deep into the city. The attack came amid growing hopes of talks to end 17 years of war in Afganistan. This map depicts the location of the Taliban attack. Click on the map to learn more.
