Canada
Marijuana Legalization
Canada has voted to legalize marijuana nation-wide beginning October 17, 2018, making it the second country in the world to fully legalize marijuana – Uruguay legalized it in 2013. Adults will be able to carry up to 30 grams of legally purchased marijuana, as well as cultivate it. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes that the move will take the market share away from organized crime. Adults will only be allowed to purchase marijuana from retailers regulated by provinces and territories, or from federally licensed producers. While the legalization stretches nationwide, provinces are allowed to establish their own regional laws; Quebec and Manitoba have already decided to ban homegrown marijuana. This map depicts different cannabis regional laws in Canada. Click on the map to learn more.

Koko the Gorilla Dies
Koko, the 46-year-old western lowland gorilla, died in her sleep Tuesday morning in Woodside, California. She was born at the San Francisco Zoo in 1971 and began to learn African sign language early in life. Koko became the subject of a research project by scientist Penny Patterson and Stanford University in 1974 to teach gorillas sign language and study their cognitive abilities. Koko’s emotional and intelligent capabilities made her a brilliant ambassador for human and animal communication – which has major implications for the rights of other gorillas and animals around the world. Currently, there are only about 100,000 western lowland gorillas remaining in the wild. Mountain Gorilla numbers are as low as 600. This map depicts the extent of Gorilla species in the wild. Summer Solstice
June 21st marks the official start of the summer, the summer solstice – the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. The summer solstice appears when the tilt of Earth’s axis is most inclined towards the sun. On this day, the sun reaches its highest elevation in the Northern Hemisphere and makes it the longest day of the year. The number of hours of daylight varies according to the latitude – the further north, the more daylight hours. People celebrate this special day of the year all over the world, especially at Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, where the sun rises right above, and perfectly aligns with the Heel Stone. This map depicts different numbers of daylight hours on Summer Solstice. Click on the map to expand.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Which independent country has the lowest population density?

A: Mongolia
Mongolia has a population density of 1.9 people per sqaure kilometer. Though Greenland and the Falkland Islands have a slightly lower population density, they are not categorized as independent countries but rather autonomous territories. Mongolia wins by being both an independent country, and having a population density of 1.9 people per square km.
