FIFA Hosts of 2026
After a vote in Moscow on Wednesday, FIFA announced the 2026 World Cup will be held in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.. The three countries, which joined together as the “United Bid,” will be the first countries to come together to host the World Cup. As a competitor against Morocco, the United Bid won 134 votes out of 203 FIFA member countries. The existing stadiums and infrastructure were major factors considered in the vote. A prerequisite to being considered is having a stadium; 16 of the 23 eligible cities will be chosen to host the tournament. This map depicts the location of 23 proposed cities. California Voting on Split
Venture capitalist Tim Draper’s proposed ‘Cal-3’ split surpassed the number of signatures necessary to earn a spot on the November ballot. The measure would split California into 3 separate states, North California, South California, and California. Draper and other advocates for the split argue that California is too big because its government isn’t able to serve the needs of smaller regional communities and their most pressing issues such as school systems, high taxes, and deteriorating infrastructure. If the measure passes in November, the decision will move on to Congress. In 2014, Draper proposed a similar measure to split California into six states, but failed to get the required number of signatures. This map depicts the proposed division of California. Click on the map to learn more.

Macedonia
A New Name
After 27 years of talks and protests, the Republic of Macedonia and its southern neighbor, Greece, have reached an agreement on the disputed name ‘Macedonia.’ The Republic of Macedonia will soon be called ‘Republic of North Macedonia’ – ‘Severna Makedonija’ in Macedonian. The dispute began when Yugoslavia split in 1991 and the Republic of Macedonia was formed. Greece objected to the singular name “Macedonia,” saying it implied a territorial claim to the entire region of Macedonia, most of which is located within Northern Greece. The dispute has kept The Republic of Macedonia from joining NATO and the European Union. This map depicts the Republic of Macedonia in relation to Greece and the region of Macedonia. Click on the map to learn more.
