China
Drop In Tariffs
Friday morning, Chinese state news, Xinhua News Agency, stated U.S. soybean and pork imports will be exempt from tariffs. The announcement arrives amid upcoming trade negotiations between the two nations in early October. Since the start of the trade war, the U.S. soybean industry- the nation’s largest export to China- has been one of the hardest hit, with exports totaling $3.1 billion, down from $12.2 billion the previous year. China’s pork industry is also facing a swine fever epidemic which has significantly depleted their own production and sales. Yesterday, the U.S. agreed to delay another round of Chinese tariffs to October 15.

Zimbabwe
Final Resting Place
Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe will be buried at the Heroes’ Acres- a monument for national heroes in the capital, Harare, on Sunday. The announcement was made by a family spokesman, following their initial shock at not having been consulted by the government about funeral arrangements. Mugabe died at the age of 95 last week while being treated in Singapore. He ruled the southern African nation for 37 years until he was ousted by the army in November 2017. Several people were injured yesterday during a stampede at Rufaro Stadium after a crowd insisted on viewing Mugabe’s body up close. Robert Mugabe was sworn in as Zimbabwe’s first leader at Rufaro Stadium in 1980.

Democratic Republic of Congo
Train Derailment Kills 50
Yesterday morning a train traveling along the south eastern province of Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) derailed, with three cars coming off the track. Although official numbers vary, the current death toll is approximately 50 people. Witnesses worry this number could reach up to 100, as many of the train passengers are still trapped under cars. The DRC has a record of poor railway safety, with several other fatal crashes occurring in the last year. Many trains date back to the 1960s and tracks are in need of repair. The government has sent emergency respondents to the scene and is monitoring the situation.
