China: Entire City to be Tested

China
Entire City to be Tested
A minor outbreak of COVID-19 has occurred in the port city of Qingdao in China’s Shandong Province. Chinese authorities aim to test all nine million residents within five days in an unprecedented testing drive in response to the outbreak. The confirmation of six cases of COVID-19 in the city prompted the Chinese government to announce their first mass testing in months. This map by AFP shows the location of Qingdao in northeastern China. The virus, which first emerged in China last year, has been brought relatively under control there, in contrast to most other countries. The availability of rapid tests and swift lockdowns have prevented secondary waves of the virus and recently allowed for hundreds of millions of Chinese to travel across the country in celebration of their ‘Golden Week’ holiday.

Armenia and Azerbaijan
Ceasefire Reached and Violated
Early Saturday morning, foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire to halt the recent conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The terms of the agreement, brokered in Moscow by Russian leaders, were limited, and sought only to pause the fighting to exchange prisoners and collect the remains of soldiers from the battlefield. Immediately after the ceasefire took effect at noon on Saturday, both sides accused the other of violating the terms of the agreement. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Armenian forces fired missiles at several cities in their territory, including the country’s second largest city Ganja, where nine civilians were reported killed and more than 30 others wounded. Armenian forces reported shelling near the town of Kapan in southeastern Armenia, and said one civilian was killed. Both sides denied the other’s claims. The recent conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh began on September 27 and has left hundreds dead, and represents biggest escalation of conflict since a separatist war in the region ended in 1994.

United States
Delta in the U.S.
Hurricane Delta made landfall in Louisiana with 100 mph winds only six weeks after Hurricane Laura devastated the area. As of Sunday, there had been one reported death and a power outage affecting over 400,000 thousand households in the southern U.S. In Georgia, the storm spawned two tornados leading to a train derailment, property damage, and two injuries. Delta, now a tropical depression, is moving toward the North East bringing heavy rains and the possibility of flash floods to parts of Mississippi and Tennessee. Delta is the fifth hurricane to make landfall in the United States this year, the most since 2005; and one of ten named storms to do the same, the most since 1916.

This map depicts the predicted path of the Delta storm system. Click on the map to learn more.

Friday’s Answer

Q: Where is the only place on earth where rocks from the earth’s mantle (6 km below the ocean floor) are actively exposed above sea-level?

A: Macquarie Island
Located about 932.05 mi (1,500 km) south-east of Tasmania and approximately halfway between Australia and the Antarctic continent. The island is approximately 21.12 mi (34 km) long and 3.41 mi (5.5 km) wide at its broadest point and is the exposed crest of the undersea Macquarie Ridge. The island allows scientists to study geological features and processes of oceanic crust formation and plate boundary dynamics, as it is the only place on earth where rocks from the earth’s mantle are exposed. The island also lies in latitudes known as the ‘Furious Fifties’ because of the frequency of very strong winds and stormy seas, which have sculpted the island.
