China-European Union: China Responds to EV Tariffs

China-European Union
China Responds to EV Tariffs
Trade tensions between China and the European Union (EU) have escalated following the latter’s announcement to raise tariffs up to 50 percent on electric vehicle shipments from China, prompting the Chinese government to open an anti-dumping investigation into pork from the EU. A suspension of EU pork exports to China would result in a massive loss of business for the European meat industry, hitting farmers in Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium the hardest. In their application requesting the investigation, the China Animal Agriculture Association reported the EU had been dumping low-priced pork products into China, affecting China’s industry and farming. Following an earlier trade action targeting French brandy imports, Beijing’s investigation may put further pressure on individual European countries to encourage the European Commission to eliminate the EV tariffs before they are confirmed on July 4th.

This map depicts the global EV production capacity in 2023. China leads in annual EV output, with over 3 million EVs produced for BYD and 750,000 for Tesla. Click on the map to learn more.

Greece
Migrants Thrown Overboard
The Greek coastguard has been accused of throwing migrants overboard to their deaths. Within three years, witnesses claim that the Greek coast guard has killed dozens of migrants in the Mediterranean, nine of whom were tossed into the ocean intentionally. Migrants have claimed that Greek officials had pushed them straight into the water or that they had arrived on Greek islands only to be hunted down. Additionally, migrants have reported that they were put on inflatable boats without motors, which later seemed to have been punctured or deflated. BBC News has presented video evidence of 12 migrants in Greek boats being abandoned in the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek coastguard has rejected all accusations.

This map depicts the Greek islands where migrants are allowed to seek asylum. Click on the map to learn more.

Space
Voyager 1 Fully Operational
After seven months of difficulties, the Voyager 1 spacecraft has resumed full operations. In November 2023, the probe, which is the furthest human-built object from Earth, began returning unintelligible data to NASA. Finally, this past April, NASA engineers successfully managed to get the probe to return diagnostic information that helped them identify a corrupted chip. The engineers then sent instructions for Voyager 1’s systems to bypass the malfunction, which resulted in the probe resuming normal communications and the restored operation of two of its four instruments. Late last week, the engineering team confirmed the operation of the remaining two instruments used by Voyager 1 to track plasma waves, magnetic fields, and particles had been restored. The ability of the NASA crew to diagnose and repair a major malfunction on Voyager 1 at a distance of 15 billion miles (24 billion km) is considered a major achievement, and the mission team hopes to keep the probe active until the 50th anniversary of its launch, in September, 2027.

This map depicts the paths of the Voyager probes launched in 1977. Voyager 1, which is the furthest object to have travelled from Earth, was recently restored to full operation after a systems corruption nearly brought it offline last November. Click on the map to learn more.

Friday’s Answer

Q: What is the most linguistically diverse country in the world?

A: Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse country in the world, with more than 800 distinct indigenous languages belonging to two radically different language groups—Austronesian, to which the local languages classified as Melanesian belong, and non-Austronesian, or Papuan. There are some 200 related Austronesian languages. Austronesian speakers generally inhabit the coastal regions and offshore islands. Papuan speakers, who constitute the great majority of the population, live mainly in the interior. The approximately 550 non-Austronesian languages have small speech communities, the largest being Engan, Melpa, and Kuman. Tok Pisin, an English-based creole, is the most widely spoken, serving as the country’s lingua franca.
