Protests Continue
Thousands of protesters converged on Hong Kong’s police headquarters Friday as part of an ongoing series of peaceful demonstrations against a proposed extradition bill. The protesters, who are mostly students, have surrounded the police complex and blocked major roads throughout the area. Though police have asked protesters to disperse, the demonstrations show no signs of relenting. In response to the protests, the legislation, which would allow extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China, has been suspended indefinitely. Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, has vowed to address concerns about the bill.

Whales to be Freed From ‘Jail’
Russia plans to release nearly 100 whales from a pen on the Sea of Japan in the far east after international outcry. The whales will be released into their natural habitat over a period of four months, with eight whales released in the first stage of the operation. 11 killer whales and 87 belugas were captured last year in the Sea of Okhotsk for scientific purposes, but experts and advocacy groups were concerned they would be sent to theme parks or aquariums in China. Environmental group Greenpeace Russia believes that at least four whales have died in captivity, while others are showing signs of poor health and hypothermia.

At least 60 people were on board, with some passengers sitting on the roof of the vehicle, when the bus rolled off the road and fell over 500 feet into a deep gorge. Volunteers at the scene formed a human chain across the bottom of the ravine to carry survivors to safety. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with many passengers being treated at local hospitals.
