China
Mysterious Illness Identified
A pneumonia-like respiratory illness that has left 59 people sick in the city of Wuhan in China’s central Hubei province has been identified. Researchers announced today that they believe the disease is a never before identified type of coronavirus, similar to viruses that cause the common cold, SARS, and MERS. Seven infected patients were reported to be in critical condition, though others have been released from hospitals when symptoms subsided after several days. Most infected patients were employed at a fish and wild animal market in the city’s center, where service has since been suspended. Officials in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan have reported possible cases of the same illness involving travelers coming from Wuhan, prompting airports across the region to set up monitoring sites for travelers from central China.

United States
Macy’s Store Closures
Macy’s is set to close at least 28 stores in the coming weeks, along with one Bloomingdale’s location. According to media reports, the affected states include California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington. A Macy’s spokesperson stated the store closures are just part of a regular review process for the retailer. In August 2016, the company announced it would close 100 stores due to a decline in sales but has not confirmed whether the latest closures are part of the 2016 announcement or if they are additional closures. On Monday, Pier 1 Imports also announced it plans to close up to 450 locations, nearly half of its 942 stores.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: The world’s youngest desert, the Aralkum desert, appeared in the 1960’s and replaced the seabed of which shrinking lake?

A: The Aral Sea
Following new Soviet Union water diversion projects along rivers that fed the Aral Sea, the once fourth-largest lake in the world began to shrink in the 1960’s. By 2014, the sea had almost completely disappeared and been replaced by the Aralkum desert.
