Deadly Car Bomb
A car bomb was detonated in Bogota, Colombia near a policy academy. Officials confirm that at least 20 people were killed and 68 injured in the worst attack in the capital in 16 years. The attack raises concerns among residents and authorities that the level of safety in Bogota is fragile and at the whim of rebel groups such as the National Liberation Army and FARC (The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). Officials have identified the suspected bomber as a 56-year old man; he died in the attack.

North Korea
Bio Weapons Threat Real
Military analysts have become increasingly concerned about North Korea’s bio-weapons program which they say is “advanced, underestimated, and highly lethal.” Biological weapons are far deadlier and pose a more immediate threat than other forms of arms, including nuclear. Experts are worried about unusually lethal strikes such as smallpox. According to a recently released analysis, North Korea and foreign researchers are collaborating to learn biotech skills and build infrastructure – rapidly increasing their military capabilities. A former Pentagon official noted, “North Korea is far more likely to use biological weapons than nuclear ones.” Satellite images suggest Pyongyang, North Korea is a major area of research and development, and Munchon and Chongju are locations of weaponization and production, respectively.

World
Endangered Coffee
A new study reveals that at least 60 percent of “wild coffee” species are threatened or at risk of extinction; a possibility, scientists say, that will only be exacerbated by climate change over time. More than 100 types of coffee grow naturally in forests, granting the name “wild coffee.” The species are essential to the survival of the two commercial coffee species processed for global consumption, Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora). Wild coffee is predominantly found in the forests of Africa with a large majority of species in Madagascar. India, Sri Lanka, and Australia are also home to wild coffee species.

Q: Which festively named island is home to the acclaimed annual red crab mass migration?
A: Christmas Island
Christmas Island is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, lying south of Java, Indonesia. The island is known for its spectacular migration of the Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis). It is estimated that 40 – 50 million of these bright red land crabs live in their preferred shady sites all over the island and make the trip from the forest to the coast in late fall for breeding.
