Crimean Peninsula
18 Killed at College
At the Kerch Polytechnic College in Crimea, an 18-year-old student carried out a combined bomb and gun attack that killed at least 18 pupils, then later took his own life. It is reported he shot people in the hallways before detonating a bomb in the cafeteria. Russian investigators first described the event as a “terrorist attack”, related to the fact that the Black Sea peninsula, Crimea, is a contested area, and that the city of Kerch specifically, is the entry point for a new controversial bridge connecting Crimea and Russia. However, Russian officials later described the incident as a “mass murder.”This map depicts the location of the Kerch Polytechnic College, where the attack occurred. Click on the map to learn more.

Honduras
Migrant Caravan
A migrant caravan from Honduras with about 3,000 people has crossed into Guatemala. The migrants are aiming to make it to the United States. President Donald Trump has threatened to cut aid to Central American countries – Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador – if they allow the caravan to travel towards the United States. It is unclear what Honduran president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, can do to stop the caravan now that it has travelled out of Honduran territory. However, the president said that the government is preparing to support any migrants who leave the caravan and return home. This map depicts the route of the migrant caravan from Honduras into Guatemala. Click on the map to learn more.

Canada
Recreational Marijuana Legalized
Today Canada became the second country in the world, and the first major economy, to legalize recreational marijuana – making it the largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace. Each province and territory has their own legislation pertaining to issues such as minimum age restrictions, as well as where it is legal to sell and consume the product. Sales began this morning in Newfoundland. A federal official said Canada will pardon everyone previously convicted for possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana – the current legal threshold. Canada legalized medical marijuana in 2001.This map depicts Canada’s cannabis regulations by province. Click on the map to learn more.
