Democratic Republic of Congo: 129 Dead in Jailbreak

Democratic Republic of Congo
129 Dead in Jailbreak
A jailbreak attempt at Congo’s main prison this morning has left 129 people dead. According to Congolese authorities, 24 of the deceased were shot by guards as they tried to escape from Makala Central Prison in the capital, Kinshasa. Reports are coming that there was apparently a stampede in the overcrowded facility, but whether the stampede caused the other deaths and if the remaining victims are all inmates has not yet been clarified. In the chaos, a fire destroyed the prison’s administrative buildings, registry, hospital, and food depots, and 59 people were injured. Makala only has a capacity for 1,500 people, but has been known to hold over 12,000 inmates, most of whom are awaiting trial. This is the worst incident at the facility since a religious sect stormed the prison in 2017, freeing over 4,000 prisoners and leaving 80 dead.

Ukraine
Russian Missile Strike Kills 47
A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Poltava this morning has resulted in 47 deaths and another 180 people injured. Poltava is not a frontline city, but is in range of Russian long-range missiles, in this instance believed to be the Iskander-M, which has a range of 310 miles (500 km). The Iskander’s parabolic launch path, taking it high into the air before coming down near-vertically to its target, makes it difficult to intercept for air defense systems. While Poltava has thus far not been a focus of attacks to the same degree as other cities in Ukraine, unconfirmed reports speculate this attack was targeting military training facilities. The death count for this attack makes it the single deadliest by Russia against Ukraine in 2024.

Australia
Earthquake Electricity Forms Gold
Writing in a new study in Nature Geoscience, Australian researchers described how they tested a theory for how gold deposits are generated from quartz. According to the team, piezoelectricity is the charge generated by quartz, a mineral that typically hosts significant gold deposits, when subjected to stress. The team replicated the conditions quartz might experience during an earthquake, submerging quartz crystals in a gold-rich fluid and applying stress using a motor to simulate the shaking of an earthquake. After the experiment, the stressed quartz was found to have electrochemically deposited gold onto its surface and also to have formed and accumulated gold nanoparticles. This discovery supports a plausible explanation for the formation of large gold nuggets in quartz veins, with repeated stress by earthquakes leading to the formation of significant gold accumulations.

Friday’s Answer

Q: What is the largest lake in Africa and the chief reservoir for the Nile River?

A: Lake Victoria
Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the chief reservoir of the Nile, lying mainly in Tanzania and Uganda but bordering on Kenya. Its area is 26,828 square miles (69,484 square km). Among the freshwater lakes of the world, it is exceeded in size only by Lake Superior in North America. Its greatest length from north to south is 210 miles (337 km), its greatest breadth 150 miles (240 km). Its waters fill a shallow depression in the centre of the great plateau that stretches between the Western and Eastern Rift Valleys. Lake Victoria is drained solely by the Nile River near Jinja, Uganda, on the lake’s northern shore. The Lake Victoria region is one of the most densely populated in Africa; within 50 miles (80 km) of its shores live several million people, nearly all Bantu-speaking.
