Democratic Republic of the Congo
Violence Displaces 237,000
Rebels from the March 23 Movement (M23) have seized the town of Minova in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a key supply route for the provincial capital Goma. M23 is a Rwanda-backed armed group composed of ethnic Tutsis who broke away from the Congolese army more than 10 years ago. It is one of about 100 armed groups vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern DRC, in a decades-long conflict that has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. The fighting displaced around 237,000 people over 2024 and has severely limited humanitarian access, leaving displaced populations in desperate need of shelter, food, clean water, and medical care. On Monday, rights group Amnesty International said a significant uptick in explosive attacks in densely packed population centers by both sides in the past month has had devastating consequences for civilians.

IDF Raids Jenin the the West Bank
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are engaged in an anti-terrorism raid in the Jenin area of the occupied West Bank. Palestinian health authorities say 10 people have been killed and another 40 are injured after Israeli ground troops surrounded Jenin, supported by air strikes, drones, helicopters, and armored bulldozers. The IDF warned people inside Jenin’s hospital to stay in the building overnight while explosive devices were being identified and removed, but says people are now free to leave the hospital through prepared and designated routes. Palestinian leaders are calling the current action a siege on Jenin, with roads being intentionally destroyed, keeping emergency services from accessing the injured. With ceasefire agreements holding in Lebanon and Gaza, the IDF can focus its resources on the West Bank, where Israeli settlers have caused disruptions in recent days.

Australia
Record-Breaking Coral Die-Off
A summer of mass bleaching, flooding, and two cyclones caused up to 72% coral mortality on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, according to the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Last November, the Institute recorded that 40% of the individual corals they monitored were killed. That “catastrophic” loss has since been exacerbated by significant heat stress during the Australian summer. Coral reefs are invaluable, but are also one of the most vulnerable ecosystems on the planet. According to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, at least 25% of known marine species rely on coral reefs for refuge, shelter, food, and breeding grounds, meaning die-offs have devastating cascading effects.
This map depicts the locations of the many individual coral reefs that make up Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, which has seen a record-high die-off of corals during this current Australian summer.

Q: What country is home to the deepest cave in the world?
A: Georgia
Krubera Cave is the deepest known cave on Earth. Krubera is so deep that it has (rightfully so) earned the nickname of being the ‘Everest’ of all cave systems. It is located in the Arabika Massif of the Gagra Range of the Western Caucasus, in the Gagra district of Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. The difference in elevation of the cave’s entrance and its deepest explored point is 7,208 ± 66 ft (2,197 ± 20 m). It became the deepest-known cave in the world in 2001 when the expedition of the Ukrainian Speleological Association reached a depth of 5,610 ft (1,710 m) which exceeded the depth of the previous deepest known cave, Lamprechtsofen, in the Austrian Alps, by 262 ft (80 m).
