Egypt
Massive Security Operation
Egypt has been battling to contain an Islamic insurgency in the North Sinai region. On Friday, the government began a massive security operation to combat the growing issue. The air force carried out airstrikes on militant hideouts and naval forces were deployed to cut off their supply lines. Egypt has boosted security around the country’s border crossings, shipping routes, and vital facilities. There is no indication of how long this operation will last.

Uganda
Relief Aid Corruption
Four Ugandan officials have been suspended following allegations that the reported number of refugees in Uganda have been inflated.  One spot check in Kampala, the capital city, found that 7,000 refugees were living there as compared to the reported 26,000. Uganda is host to refugees from neighboring South Sudan and other surrounding war-torn countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. Given it’s status as a refugee intake country, Uganda receives refugee aid from the United Nations and other aid relief organizations. However, as allegations against Commissioner for Refugees, Apollo Kazungu, and his three senior staff members grow, countries are considering to withdraw funding. The officials are also accused of stealing items and government land intended for the refugees, human trafficking, and election corruption.
