Deadlock in Blue Nile Dam Talks
Ethiopia announced plans for the $4 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in 2011. Since then, Egypt and Ethiopia have clashed over details of the dam’s operations. Egypt fears losing reliable access to the Nile, which provides the desert nation with over 90% of its freshwater. Ethiopia sees the hydroelectric dam, which will be Africa’s largest upon completion in 2022, as a key aspect of its economic development. In negotiations earlier this week, the first in over a year, the two countries failed to reach an agreement over annual water release amounts and how to manage flows during drought years.

Speedboat Crash in Venice
A speedboat crashed into an offshore dike in Venice on Tuesday night. This incident left three people dead and one gravely injured. Among the dead is Italian champion speedboat racer Fabio Buzzi, who was attempting to set a new record for the fastest offshore speed from Monte Carlo to Venice. The boat left Monte Carlo Monday morning and reached Venice’s flood barriers approximately 18 and a half hours later. Reports indicate that it was traveling at a speed of around 80-85 mph at the time of the accident.

English Channel
Record-Breaking Swim
Sarah Thomas is an open water swimmer, cancer survivor, and now record-breaker. Sarah swam across the English Channel four times nonstop, breaking the previous record of three. She completed her epic swim a year after receiving treatment for breast cancer. The planned route was 80 miles, but due to strong currents and the tides, she swam a total of 130 miles. Thomas set off from the British port of Dover, endured harsh currents, cold water, and was stung on the face by a jellyfish. 54 hours later, she had completed her journey, and dedicated the achievement to “all the cancer survivors.”

This interactive map depicts the 21 mile long English Channel, and the route Sarah Thomas swam. Click on the map to expand.
