Ethiopian Airlines Plane Crash
On Sunday, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 plane crashed six minutes after takeoff killing all 157 passengers. After departing from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia the plane crashed near the town of Bishoftu, located 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the capital, while on its way to Nairobi, Kenya. Investigators are still unclear about what caused the months-old plane to go down, but they have recovered the black box. China has now ordered all 737 Max 8 planes owned by Chinese airlines to be grounded.

Europe
Visa Requirements
European officials announced that starting in 2021, citizens of countries that do not currently require visas to enter EU Schengen states will require authorization to enter. The process to apply will occur through the European Travel Information and Authorization System and should not take longer than 10 minutes to complete and will cost approximately $8. The change in requirements to enter EU member states is meant to counteract terrorism. Travel to the United Kingdom, American’s top visited country, will not be impacted by this rule. However, the U.K. will likely need to come up with their own travel guidelines once they leave the European Union.

Italy
Rail Project Halted
The Italian government halted the launch of official tenders, or bids, for Italy’s share in a multi-billion high-speed rail link to France, in an attempt to defuse a dispute within the ruling coalition over the project. The Treno Alta Velocità (TAV) link is a joint venture between Italy and France aiming to link Turin and Lyon via a 58km (36-mile) tunnel through the Alps. The two populist parties in Italy’s ruling coalition have been at odds for weeks over building the high-speed rail link. Italy will still open launch tenders for the French side of the tunnel in order to not lose European Union funding.
