Ethiopia: Renewed Fighting in Tigray

Ethiopia
Renewed Fighting in Tigray
Violence has broken out in the Ethiopian region of Tigray between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The renewed conflict is viewed as one of the most serious outbreaks of fighting since the official end of the civil war four years ago, threatening the peace deal brokered by the African Union in 2022. The use of heavy artillery, drones, and aircraft have all been reported, with witnesses claiming to hear ongoing gunfire and sustained explosions. The violence has pushed hundreds of people to flee to neighboring Sudan. Fears arise that the conflict could escalate into a larger war with regional spillover, with Ethiopia’s government accusing the Sudanese army of supporting the TPLF. Sudan is accusing Ethiopia of allowing the United Arab Emirates to launch drones in support of the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary at war with the Sudanese army.

Indonesia
Ferry Fire Kills at Least 5
A ferry fire off Indonesia’s Madura Island has killed at least five people and left 28 still missing. The Mutiara Sentosa 2 was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire broke out on Sunday morning, at about 22 miles (35 km) north of Sapudi Island. Authorities reported 271 passengers and 39 crew members were on board, although the actual number of people may have been higher. 238 people have been rescued, five are confirmed dead, and 28 remain missing. The search for missing passengers across a 20-mile (32 km) stretch around the incident site, currently being undertaken by Indonesian navy ships, rescue boats, and a helicopter, could continue for weeks. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Survivors reported that the fire appeared to have started from a truck on the lower vehicle deck before spreading.

Naoero
Pacific Island Changes Its Name
Nauru has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, a spelling and pronunciation more representative of the conventions of the tiny Pacific Island’s national language. The change was enacted via a constitutional amendment passed by the nation’s parliament in May. The new name is pronounced NOW-e-ro instead of NOW-roo, and was finalized last week after the government decided to cancel a planned referendum on the decision. According to President David Adeang, the move represents a return to the original name, which was only altered for international purposes in order to ease pronunciation for foreigners. It echoes a series of country name changes such as Eswatini in 2018, and Türkiye in 2022. Along with the new spelling, the Republic of Naoero will be given the ISO country code NRO and its citizens referred to as dei-Naoero, rather than Nauruan.

This map depicts the location of the Republic of Naoero, previously known as Nauru or “Naura” in older German and English colonial spelling.

Friday’s Answer

Q: With an estimated area of 143,100 square kilometers (55,251 square miles), which country encompasses the smallest amount of land among the five Central Asian states?

A: Tajikistan
Also called the Republic of Tajikistan, Tajik Tojikiston, or Jumhurii Tojikiston, Tajikistan is the smallest of the five states comprising Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). All former Soviet republics, the Central Asian states cover a combined area of more than 1.5 million square miles (3.8 million square km). Tajikistan encompasses the smallest amount of land among the five Central Asian states at 55,000 square miles (142,449 sq km), but in terms of elevation it surpasses them all, enclosing more and higher mountains than any other country in the region. More than nine-tenths of Tajikistan’s territory is mountainous; about half lies 10,000 feet (3,000 m) or more above sea level.
