Europe: Easing Restrictions

Europe
Easing Restrictions
Governments in Europe are beginning to restart their economies after weeks of restrictions. Individual countries are taking different approaches as governments continue to monitor potential re-emergence of virus hotspots. This map by the European Commission shows the pathway in lifting coronavirus containment measures in the 27 countries of the European Union. Germany has plans in place to restart professional soccer games and to reopen restaurants while Italy, which was the initial epicenter of the crisis in Europe, is taking a more cautious approach.

This map depicts the lifting of restriction measures by governments in the European Union’s 27 member states. All COVID-19 updates will be displayed in a red box.

Iran
Friendly Fire
On Sunday evening, a missile fired by an Iranian ship mistakenly hit a support vessel, killing 19 sailors and injuring at least 15 more during Iranian Navy drills. Local reports state the missile struck the Konarak, a 47-meter (155-foot) Hendijan-class support ship, that was taking part in the exercise. The incident took place in the southern port of Jask, near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. The Iranian navy said the ship was towed ashore and that an investigation had begun.

India
Border Clash
A border dispute between China and India broke out on Saturday at the Naku La crossing in the northeastern state of Sikkim.  An estimated 150 Chinese and Indian soldiers were involved in the face-off at the important crossing point situated more than 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) above sea level near Tibet. Several soldiers sustained injuries from the stone-throwing and fist-fights between soldiers. The two countries have competing claims over their shared 3,400 kilometers (2,100 miles) border and cross border clashes have been ongoing since the 1962 war over the state of Arunachal Parde.

This map depicts the disputed border claims between China and India, according to the Indian Foreign Ministry. The most recent border clash was in the northeastern state of Sikkim. Click on the map to learn more.
