Europe
Measles Outbreak
A growing number of measles outbreaks in Europe has caused major concern among parents and health officials.  Between January and June, 37 people died in Europe from the disease this year, and about 41,000 others contracted the disease – nearly double the number from 2017. The U.S. has also seen an increase in measles cases with people diagnosed across 21 states.  Many believe measles has made such a powerful resurgence because parents are refusing to vaccinate their children. In London alone, immunization rates have dropped to 65%. This map depicts the number of measles cases by country in Europe. Click on the map to learn more.

Arctic
New Shipping Route
The world’s largest shipping container company, Maersk, is set to begin trial shipping routes through the Arctic circle on or around September 1, 2018.  As melting ice caps open up shipping lanes in the north pole, shipping times from Asia to Europe could be reduced by up to two weeks.  A ship, carrying 3,600 containers, will complete a trial run to test for economic viability and is expected to complete the route sometime in late September. While the route will reduce shipping times, some worry that the potential for environmental catastrophe in the Arctic region, such as an oil spill, makes the route inappropriate. This map depicts the potential shipping route through the Arctic Circle versus the typical shipping route through Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
