Russia-U.S. Summit
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met yesterday in Helsinki in an attempt to improve relations between the two countries. The summit was highly controversial due to confirmed allegations that Russia tampered with the 2016 U.S. election. President Trump received bipartisan criticism over his public comments at the summit, which dismissed claims made by the U.S. intelligence community and placed blame for damaged relations on the U.S. as well as Russia. Russia has been under investigation by U.S. intelligence for interfering in the 2016 U.S. election, including hacking ballot-counters and spreading false information via the internet. This map depicts states that were notified of Russian hacking attempts during the 2016 U.S. election. Click on the map to learn more.

Tour Boat Hit By Lava Bomb
A lava bomb, or flying chunk of molten rock, hit a tour boat on Monday morning in Hawaii, injuring 23 people. The boat was operated by Lava Ocean Tours, offering daily excursions to passengers to watch lava flow into the sea from the continuously erupting Mount Kilauea. Hilo Medical Center confirmed 13 passengers were treated at the hospital, while the other 10 were treated on arrival at Wailoa Harbor. The exact time of the incident and the boat’s distance from the shore are not yet known. However, the Coast Guard is now required to strictly enforce the 300-meter buffer zone to prevent future incidents. This map depicts the location of where the tour boat was hit by a lava bomb. Click on the map to expand.

Oldest Bread Discovered
Archeologists have discovered the burnt remains of a flatbread baked 14,400 years ago – more than 4,000 years before the known development of agriculture. Twenty four bread-like discoveries were found at two fireplaces in a Natufian hunter-gatherer site in Jordan, known as Shubayqa 1. The Natufian Culture, which prospered near modern-day Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria between 14,500 and 11,500 years ago, was one of the first groups of humans to build permanent homes and show evidence of organized society. Carbon-dating of the findings suggests the culture was more widespread and proliferated earlier than previously thought, and that bread-making may have lead to the subsequent emergence of agriculture during the Neolithic era. This map depicts the location of the site where the oldest bread was discovered. A: 400 feet
The Fairy Bridge is located in the Guangxi Province of China. The bridge is made of a soft limestone and spans about 400 feet long. The arch that gives the formation “bridge-like” qualities is caused by erosion of the Buliu River.
