Deadly Apartment Fire
A fire that started shortly after midnight in an apartment complex on Rue Erlanger in Paris has killed ten and injured more than thirty. Residents climbed out of windows and rushed to nearby roofs to escape the smoke and fire, leading firefighters to use ladders and ropes to save them. A female resident is currently in custody as she is suspected of purposely starting the fire. She is known to have mental health issues and was seen attempting to set a car on fire after allegedly having a fight with a neighbor.

Himalayan Region
Melting Glaciers
A new study released Monday highlights the likelihood that 2/3 of the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) region, the world’s “Third Pole,” could melt by the year 2100. China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan all share the area. The resources in the HKH region, namely the major rivers, are critical to the people living in and around the periphery of the area, providing water and agricultural capability. Should the glaciers melt, food production would face significant losses and intense flooding in the region would damage peoples homes, crops and livelihoods. Nearly 1.9 billion people live in or rely on the Himalayas directly.

Al Shabaab Attacks
Officials suspect the Islamic militant group, Al Shabaab, is responsible for the car bombing that left 11 people dead on Monday. The blast occurred in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district, a busy area of shops and restaurants. Another attack took place the same day at Bossaso located in the northern, semi-autonomous region of Puntland. Gunmen shot and killed a senior manager at a Dubai government-owned port operation. The attacks came three weeks after a deadly assault by the group on a luxury hotel complex in Nairobi, in neighboring Kenya.
