G7 Summit in Biarritz
The 45th annual G7 summit will take place from Saturday through Monday in Biarritz, France. G7, which stands for “Group of 7”, was created more than 40 years ago so political leaders from the United States, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, and France could convene and discuss security, energy, and the global economy. This year’s summit will focus on protecting biodiversity and climate and fighting inequality. French President, Emanuel Macron, has motioned to abandon the tradition of ending the summit with an agreed upon resolution, or “communique”, citing an increased divide among leaders’ stances on certain issues.

Nuclear Power Station
A floating nuclear power station set sail from the Arctic port of Murmansk today for the remote Chukotka province in eastern Russia. The station will bring electricity to more than 50,000 people in the town of Pevek, which is currently powered by a coal-fired plant and an aging nuclear power plant. However, environmentalists have voiced concerns about the risk of nuclear disaster and subsequent radiation. The station was launched just two weeks after a nuclear-power engine blew up on a Russian naval test range, killing five engineers and releasing radiation.

A new report by conservation group, TRAFFIC, reveals that more than 2,300 tigers have been poached since the turn of the century. Since 2000, there has been no decline in tiger trafficking, with an average of 120 trafficked tigers seized each year. India is home to the largest tiger population and also has the highest number of tigers trafficked. However, according to the report, tigers are also trafficked in 31 other countries where they are typically found.
